James Willis “Silver Lizard” Oakley

James Willis “Silver Lizard” Oakley, age 53, passed away Wednesday, January 24, 2007 at home, sitting in his favorite recliner, exactly where he had wanted to be.

James was born March 26, 1953 in Newport News, VA to James and Celia Oakley, the oldest of six children. As a military child, the family moved all over the United States.  His fondest memories were of the years he spent in Alaska.

James came to Odessa in 1986 from the Ft. Worth area. In May 1988, he met Lynda Louis Matthews. They spent almost 19 years together having two children, Daniel Jeremiah, now age 17, and Emily Annette, age 13. They were his pride and joy. They never doubted their dad’s love for them, as the words “I love you” were often used by the entire family. James had hoped to stay around until Daniel graduated from High School, but he did not quite make it. But because of his guidance, both children will surely grow up to be successful adults.

James loved getting on the radio and talking to his C.B. buddies, although he was unable to do it the last several months. He made some lifelong friends over the air. We’d like to take this time to thank you all for being his friend and bringing him such joy.

We’d also like to thank Dr. Borra at the West Texas Cancer Center for taking such good care of James, even when he was a pain. This also goes out to the sweet ladies at Infusion Services. We know how James could be and you all accepted him as he was. Thanks from the bottom of our hearts.

James was preceded in death by his father and one brother.

He is survived by his wife, Lynda Louise Matthews, one son Daniel Jeremiah Oakley and one daughter, Emily Annette Oakley all of Odessa, his mother, Celia Autrey of Haltom City, two brothers, Curtis Autrey and Arthur Autrey of Ft Worth and Kenneth Oakley of Arlington, one sister, Monica Oakley of Ft Worth and several nieces and nephews.

Viewing will be Saturday, January 27, 2007 from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Acres West Funeral Chapel. James will then be cremated and his ashes will be preserved by his children which was his final wish.

“Dad, we will miss you so much, but we know you loved us and will be watching over us always.”
