Jesus “Jessie” Velasquez Bermea, Sr.

Jesus “Jessie” Velasquez Bermea, Sr., longtime resident of Odessa passed away Sunday, March 25, 2007 at his residence. He was born Tuesday, October 15, 1940 in Torreon, Coahilla, Mexico.

 

Jessie and his wife settled in Odessa over 40 years ago, where he went on to learn a trade as a field electrician. He was an outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing and gardening. He was also a good carpenter and good mechanic when needed. His favorite pastime was watching sci-fi movies on television.

 

Jessie is survived by his wife, Elva Bermea of Odessa, two sons, Manuel Bermea and Jesus Bermea, Jr. both of Odessa, six brothers, Joe Bermea of Odessa, Anisimo Carrasco of San Antonio, Sam Carrasco of Hobbs, NM, Frank Carrasco of Tucson, AZ, Raymon Carrasco of Midland and Barnie Carrasco of Artesia, NM, two sisters, Esperanza Carrasco and Maria Carrasco both of Artesia, NM. He is also survived by eight grandchildren, Cynthia Trevino, Destiny Bermea, Magan Bermea, Ashley Bermea, Manuel, Bermea Jr., Melony Bermea, Jessica Bermea and Jesus Bermea, III and one great grandchild, Jesiah Salazar.

 

He was preceded in death by one brother, Mike Carrasco.

 

Rosary is scheduled for 7:00 pm, Monday, March 26 and Tuesday, March 27, 2007 at Acres West Funeral Chapel. Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled for 2:00 pm, Wednesday, March 28, 2007 at St Joseph Catholic Church with Father Joe Uecker as celebrant. Interment will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery.

 

Pallbearers are Anthony Alvarado, Chris Alvarado, Steven Bermea, Raymon Carrasco, Luis Alvarado and Matthew Galindo.

Betty Mae Olivas

 

Our loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday, March 24, 2007. Betty Mae Olivas was born Thursday, July 12, 1928 in San Antonio, Bexar County, Texas.

 

She was a caring and selfless person who cared for those in need. She was also very artistic and enjoyed painting pictures, sewing and doing arts and crafts. Betty enjoyed the outdoors and loved growing flowers and working in the yard. She was a hope and inspiration and loved by all who met her.

 

Those left behind to cherish her love and memories are one son, Roy L. Landrum, III and wife, Betty of San Antonio, two daughters, Sherry Keck of Odessa and Susan Musick of San Antonio. She also leaves behind her grandchildren, Laurie David, Luke Cox, Charla Carr all of Odessa, Kristopher, Kimberly, C.C., Mike, and James Howard all of San Antonio and great-grandchildren, Brittony, Brady, Abbi, Hannah, Emily, Dayton all of Odessa and Terry, Charles, Harlee, Hailey, Christopher and Isaac all of San Antonio.

 

Memorial services are scheduled for 10:00 am, Thursday, March 29, 2007 at Acres West Funeral Chapel with Emmett Barnard officiating.

Wendell D McMurry

Wendell D McMurry died Sunday March 25, 2007 at Medical Center Hospital. He was born May 11, 1936 in May, Texas.
 
Survivors are one daughter, Brenda Garms of Odessa, one step-son, Johnny Majors of Odessa, two step-daughters, Diana Russell of Paris, Texas and Sylvia Norvell of Odessa, two sisters, Becky Beard and Barbara Holdeman both of Odessa, four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren
 
Funeral Services are scheduled for 6:00 pm, Thursday, March 29, 2007 at Acres West Funeral Chapel with Jimmy Braswell officiating.

Milton Wayne Tarwater Jr.

Milton Wayne Tarwater Jr. age 40, passed away Wednesday, March 28, 2007 at his residence in Odessa. He was born Wednesday, November 16, 1966 in Odessa. He was a lifetime Odessa resident who worked as a long haul truck driver.

Survivors include his mother:  Judy Washburn of Odessa; grandfather:  Wyman Tarwater of Guin, AL; one brother: Richard “Shane” Tarwater of Odessa; one sister:  Joy McMillon of Mineral Wells, TX; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be 2:00 pm Monday, April 2, 2007 at Brad Cemetery near Mineral Wells, TX.  Pastor Ted Oliver will officiate.  Arrangements are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel of West Odessa.

Annette Lynn Whirley
Annette Lynn Whirley died Monday, April 9, 2007 in Odessa. She was born Thursday, May 11, 1961 in Portland, OR.
 
She was a cook for Pancake Alley in Odessa.
 
SURVIVORS: Husband, Dennis Jack Whirley, Sr, of Odessa, one son, Dennis Jack "DJ" Whirley, Jr of Odessa, one daughter, Renee Garcia of Sacramento, CA, mother, Jill White of Woodland, CA, one brother, James Lee Cresap of Woodland, CA and two grandchildren.
 
Memorial Services are scheduled for 7:30 pm, Thursday, April 12, 2007 at Westview Church of God with Brother Tony Conger officiating.

Willie Lee Southerland Hodges Brooks

Willie Lee Southerland Hodges Brooks joined her Lord and Savior on April 18, 2007 at the age of 89, at Hospice House in Odessa.

Willie was born January 10, 1918 to S. L. and Frances (Foerster) Southerland in Oklahoma. She married Loyd Hodges in June 1935. After his death, she married Travis Brooks in November 1946 in Graham, Texas.

After the death of Loyd, Willie and her two small daughters moved to Oklahoma City where she attended cosmetology school. She gave the first chemical perm ever given at the school. Willie and Travis moved to Odessa in 1953, where she volunteered for the Civil Air Service as a Spotter. One evening, Willie spotted an unidentified object and reported it. When she later asked what it was, she was told that they could not tell her anything, except that it was shot down.

Willie worked for Rainbow Baking Company’s Day Old Store for over 20 years. She and Travis moved to Cisco, Texas in October 1988 where she made numerous friends. She moved back to Odessa in September 2003 and became an active member of the Northside Senior’s Center, washing and drying kitchen linen, rolling the flatware and serving the handicapped. Willie enjoyed traveling with her brother, Sonny, to visit their siblings and families, fishing, garage selling and attending musicals in the communities surrounding Cisco. She also enjoyed playing BINGO at the Senior’s Center with her son-in-law’s brother, Roland Washburn. Willie will be dearly missed by her family, friends and co-workers.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, Loyd Hodges and Travis Brooks, daughter, Maudie Prevost, sister, Hattie Mae Milner and brothers, Harold, Howard “John”, Richard and Franklin Southerland.

She is survived by her daughter, Frances Washburn and husband, John of Odessa, one son, Marshall Brooks of Odessa, son-in-law, Joe Prevost of Andrews, brothers, Sonny Southerland and wife, Ruby of Dexter, NM, Raymond Southerland and wife, Janet of Tahlequah, OK, sister, Lorene Oka of California, ten grandchildren, Loyd, Lynn Dee, Joel, Terrell, Tracy, Kristi, Michael, Tricia, Cody and Alexander and eleven great-grandchildren, Tyriel, Seth, Nathan, Lauren, Megan, Jordan, Camron, Canyon, Cameron, Gavin and Tiffanie.

Services are scheduled for 2:00 pm, Friday, April 20, 2007 at Westover Baptist Church with Reverend Terrell Wright officiating. Interment will be held at 1:00 pm, Saturday, April 21, 2007 in Oak Grove Cemetery in Graham, Texas.

Clyde Frank Morgan

Clyde Frank Morgan, age 64, passed away Saturday, April 21, 2007 at his residence in Odessa.  He was born Monday, November 30, 1942 in Chicago, Cook County, IL to the late Jesse W. and Susie B. (McDonald) Morgan.

Clyde was a member of the Full Gospel River of Life Church.  He worked as a diesel mechanic in the oilfield, but was better known as a DJ.  He loved to sing.  Another favorite pastime was watching football – He never missed a Cowboys game!  He was a very good Daddy and Granddaddy who loved his family and friends foremost

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife:  Dallas Morgan of Odessa; four sons:  Frank Morgan Jr. and wife Jill, John Alan Morgan and wife Kathleen, Tony L. McCaslin and wife Pattie Galvan, and Cody McCaslin and wife Barbara, all of Odessa; three daughters:  Melissa Fay Camacho and husband Boy, Lora Kay Bloomfield and husband J.J. also of Odessa, and Jeri Leed Kitch and husband Stephen of Evansville, IN; one brother:  Russell D. McDonell and wife Della of Denton, TX; one sister:  Jean Runion of Pauls Valley, OK; two nieces:  Teresa and Christy of Denton, TX; one nephew:  Russell of Austin, TX; twenty-eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A funeral service in celebration of Clyde’s life will be held 2 pm Wednesday, April 25, 2007 at the Acres West Funeral Chapel with Rev. Russell McDonell officiating, assisted by Bro. Sol Angel DeJesus
Sol Angel DeJesus died Saturday, April 21, 2007 at her residence in Odessa.
 
She was born Monday, April 2, 1956 in Salinas, Puerto Rico. She was a housekeeper.
 
SURVIVORS: son, Freddie de Jesus of Lubbock, daughters, Jeanette de Jesus and Grace Rodriguez both of Odessa, brothers, Octavio de Jesus and Antonio de Jesus, both of Jersey City, New Jersey and Jorge de Jesus and Angel de Jesus, both of Puerto Rico, sisters, Wanda de Jesus of Puerto Rico and Carmen J Hernandez of Odessa
 
Interment will take place at Wico-Lopez Cemetery in Salinas, Puerto Rico at a later date.

PattiAnn Winters

PattiAnn Jean Winters, age 7, is now safe in the arms of Jesus.  She slipped away from us on Saturday, April 21, 2007 just days before her eighth birthday.  She was born Sunday, April 25, 1999 in Cedar Rapids, Linn County, Iowa.

PattiAnn was a first grader at Barbara Jordan Elementary.   She was an A-B Honor Roll student.  She loved her laptop computer.  She was a precocious child, full of life, who loved animals.  She was very musical and loved playing her keyboard.  PattiAnn talked a lot and made good conversation from a very young age.  She was very grown up for her age and very outgoing. She had lots of friends.  She always had a big grin on her face.  PattiAnn was a unique little girl with a wide range of interests from camping (and setting up the campfire by herself!) to bike riding.

Those left behind to cherish her memory are her mom:  Audra Reid of Odessa; her dad:  Jesse Winters of Cornell, IL; paternal grandparents:  Bob and Dorothy Winters of West Bloomfield, WI; maternal grandparents:  Richard and Davonna Reid of South Haven, MS; great grandmothers:  Eleanor Olson of Manawa, WI and Lela Reid of Minden, LA; four brothers:  Adam Winters of Cornell, IL, Andrew Reid and Ethan Winters, both of Odessa, and William Winters of Waupaca, WI; and one sister:  Savannah Reid of Odessa.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Bethany Chanez.

Funeral services are scheduled for 10:00 am, Friday, April 27, 2007 at Acres West Funeral Chapel with Pastor Carrie Barrett and Dr. Dewey Blevins officiating. Estanislado Castro
Estanislado Castro, age 71, died Sunday, April 22, 2007 in Odessa.
 
He was born Monday, March 9, 1936 in Marfa, Texas. He was a self-employed gardner.
 
SURVIVORS: sister, Maria Castro of Odessa.
 
Services are scheduled for 10:00 am, Wednesday, April 25, 2007 at Acres West Funeral Chapel with Pastor Arreola Roman officiating. Interment will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery.

Josefina E. Navarrete

Josefina Espinoza Navarrete, age 78, passed away Sunday, April 22, 2007 at Medical Center Hospital. She was born Wednesday, January 9, 1929 in Coyame, Chihuahua, Mexico to the late Jose and Brijida (Fernandez) Espinoza.

Those left behind to cherish her love and memories are her children; four sons: Amado Navarrete and Santana Navarrete both of Coyame, Chihuahua, Mexico, Juan Navarrete and Gonzalo Navarrete both of Odessa, and three daughters:  Maria Fuentes of Midland and Concepcion Olivas and Pilar Socorro Navarrete both of Odessa; ten grandchildren:  Delma, Alvaro, Miguel, Marisa, Mireya, Inocente, Victoria, Josie, Victor, Laura; and thirteen great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband:  Pilar Socorro Navarrete, her daughter:  Rosa Emma Navarrete, one granddaughter: Victoria Olivas, her brother:  Juan Espinoza, and one sister:  Teresa Martinez.

Rosary is scheduled for 7 pm, Wednesday, April 25, 2007 at Acres West Funeral Chapel. Mass of Christian Burial will take place 12 noon Friday, April 27, 2007 in Coyame, Mexico.  Interment will follow at Panteon Municipal de Coyame.
