Bess "Betty" Smith

Bess Gordon Smith, age 88, departed this life to be with her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, October 24, 2007 from Hospice House of Odessa.  She entered this life, Wednesday, October 15, 1919 in Sweetwater, Nolan County, Texas to the late Lee G. and Francis (Sublett) Headrick.

She married F.B. “Smittie” Smith on November 19, 1937 in Sweetwater. They owned and operated Smittie’s Liquor Store in Odessa for 40 years. She was a past member of the Eagles Lodge and the W.A.B.B.I’s.  She worshipped at the First Baptist Church.

Those left to cherish her love and memories are her brother:  R.E. “Pap” Headrick of Sweetwater; one grandchild: Jeff Smith of Maryneal, TX; four great-grandchildren: Sarah, Rebecca, Brice, and Elizabeth; and several nieces and nephews:  Lacresha Knapp of Odessa, Donna Headrick of AZ, Marsha Headrick of Huntsville, TX, Bobby Adams of Odessa, Tommy Adams of OK, Jeff Headrick of Lubbock, Brett Headrick of Austin, and Max Headrick of Sweetwater.

Bess was preceded in death by her parents, her husband: Smittie; one son:  Eddie Don Smith; two brothers:  Tom Headrick and L.G. Headrick; and one sister:  Luella House.

Graveside services will be 1:00 pm Friday, October 26, 2007 at Sunset Memorial Gardens with Brother Emmett Barnard officiating. Condolences to the family may be sent at acreswestfuneral.com. Services are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel.

Bennie Ellis

Bennie Ellis, age 56, of Odessa passed away Wednesday, October 24, 2007 at Medical Center Hospital.  He was born Tuesday, December 12, 1950 in Lubbock, TX to Bennie Lee Ellis, Sr. and Jerry Joan (Castleberry) Ellis.

In his younger days, he had a pretty good record as a race car driver at Twin City Speedway.  He also spent some time as a truck driver.  More recently, he worked a mechanic, but music was his love.  Together with his wife, Dendy, they DJ’d as She & I Karaoke.  He was a loving husband, an awesome father, and a loyal friend.  He will be dearly missed.

Those left to cherish his love and memory include his mother:  Jerry Sorrells of Garland, TX; his loving wife: Dendy Ellis of Odessa; four sons:  Curtis Ellis, Billy Deal, and Dustin Rice, all of Odessa, and Eric Rice of Midland; six daughters:  Theresa Pate, Gabrielle Russell, Courtney Rice, Brittany Rice, Kelly Seymour, and Melissa Ellis, all of Odessa; one sister:  Elaine Dickman of Odessa; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; his “Hillbillies” kids; and numerous friends.

Bennie was preceded in death by his father:  Bennie Ellis Sr. and brother:  Mike Ellis.

A visitation will be held Saturday, October 27, 2007 from 1:00 to 3:00 pm, followed by a 4:00 pm memorial service at Acres West Funeral Chapel officiated by Pastor Don Castleberry.  Arrangements are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel of Odessa.

Mary Helen Williamson

Mary Helen Williamson, age 69, of Odessa passed from this life Thursday, October 25, 2007 at Medical Center Hospital.  She was born April 19, 1938 in San Augustine, TX to the late Roy and Myrtie (Wise) Parker.

Mary was a beloved mother and grandmother who liked to cook.  She worked as a waitress at Pojo's Restaurant.  She would go out to the lake to fish some, but also loved to play Bingo or play in the game rooms.

Those left to cherish her love and memory include her husband- AB Williamson of Odessa; one son - Adwin Eric Williamson of Farmington, NM; two daughters - Sheila Olene Belknap  and Patricia Ann Bradford, both of Odessa; two brothers - Johnny Parker of San Augustine, TX and Horace Parker of Houston, TX; six sisters - Gladys Henley, Jewel Williams and Betty Henley, all of San Augustine, TX, Faye Foster of Many, LA, Anna Johnston of Edgewater Park, NJ, and Oneda Thomas of Angleton, TX; six grandchildren, one great-grandchild and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 3 pm Monday, October 29, 2007 at Acres West Funeral Chapel with Bro. Bishop officiating. Pallbearers will include:  Morgan Belknap, Eric Hendley, Grady Henley, John Herriage, Quentin McKee, Randy Patterson, Eddie Whitson, and Walter Yancy.  Interment will follow at Western Roses Memorial Park Cemetery.  Arrangements are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel.

William Douglas Hamilton

William Douglas Hamilton, age 69, of Odessa passed away Saturday, October 27, 2007 at his daughter's residence in Midland.  He was born Thursday, December 30, 1937 in Snyder to William Park and Julia Mae (Norris) Hamilton.

He is survived by one son, Gary Hamilton of Odessa, three step-sons, Donnie Wadley, Billy Durbin, and Rick Durbin, all of Odessa; three daughters, Becky Carey of Weatherford, Denice Dupont of Granada Hills, CA and Juli Poe of Midland and one step-daughter, Tracy Travis of Hico. He is also survived by his Mother, Julia Mae Carlock of Longview, TX; one brother, Joe Hamilton of Odessa; and two sisters, Sherry Percival of Katy, TX and Jean Brantley of Longview, TX; and eleven grandchildren.

Memorial services are scheduled for 1:00 pm Friday, November 2, 2007 at First Baptist Church of Midland with Pastor David Johnson officiating.  Services are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel of Odessa.

Alvie R. Adams

Alvie R. Adams, long time resident of Odessa passed from this life on Thursday, November 1, 2007. He was born Sunday, November 11, 1923 in Erath County, Texas to the late J. J. Adams and Sara Trumble Adams.

He married the love of his life, Reba Watson in 1942 in O’Donnell, Texas and went on to serve with the Army Air Corps during WWII where he was wounded. Later he returned and went to work in the oilfields where he retired. He was a member of the Eisenhower Church of Christ.

Those left to cherish his love and memories are his wife, Reba Adams of Odessa, three daughters, Lana Howard and husband Lon, Kathy Nunley and husband Jimmy and Joni Bates all of Odessa. He also leaves behind five grandchildren, Jay, Jason, Tim, Stefanie and Tisha and one great-grandchild, Cohen.

Alvie was preceded in death by one son-in-law, Mike and six brothers, Earl, Carl, Marvin, Frank, Egbert and Wade.

Graveside services are scheduled for 2:00 pm, Saturday, November 3, 2007 at Western Roses Memorial Park with Mr. Lon Howard officiating. Honorary pallbearers will be his grandsons Jay Howard, Tim Howard, Jason Nunley, son-in-law, Jimmy Nunley, and grandson-in-law, David James.

Memorials may be made to Odessa Christian School or Home Hospice.

Arrangements are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel.

Leo Elmer Bell

Mr. Leo Bell, age 68, passed from this life to begin his eternal life Thursday, November 1, 2007 at his residence in Odessa.  He was born February 15, 1939 in Colorado City, TX to the late Ollie Oliver Bell and Lois Marie Ward Bell.  He married Linda Patterson April 20, 1957 in Colorado City, TX.  Together they raised six beautiful children. 

Mr. Bell was a retired pastor, mechanic, and carpenter.   He was a member of the Church of God.  He loved the Lord and praised Him through song.  He loved to sing and play music in church, and also wrote songs.   He was a loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather.

Those left to cherish his love and memory are his loving wife:  Linda Bell of Odessa; one son:  Jimmy Lee Bell of Odessa; five daughters:  Cynthia Cox of Lubbock, TX, Sandra Trantham of Oklahoma, Brenda Jones, Barbara Heath, and Loretta Rodgers, all of Odessa; two brothers:  Ernest Bell of Andrews and David Bell of Fort Worth; two sisters:  Evelyn Whitlock and Dorothy Wallraven, both of Fort Worth; 27 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. 

Funeral services will be 10 am Monday, November 5, 2007 at Acres West Funeral Chapel in Odessa with Brothers Charles Shuffield and Tony Conger officiating.  Graveside services will follow at 3 pm at Resthaven Memorial Park in Midland.  Pallbearers will be Wes Rodgers, David Trantham, Billy Heath, Chris Jones, Ben Jones, and Russel.  Services are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel. 

Fern Gaines

Fern Gaines, age 70, of Odessa passed from this life Sunday, November 4, 2007 at Deerings Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.  She was born September 27, 1937 in Paint Rock, TX to the late Jefferson Davis Carson and Myrtle Annie (Giles) Carson.  She was a homemaker.  Fern had made Odessa her home for the past 60 years.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband:  Robert Wesley Swaim in 1967; and one sister:  Winnie Lou Carson.

Those left to cherish her love and memory include her children:  Duane Wesley Swaim of Victoria, TX,  James Lesley Swaim of Odessa, Brendolynn Johnner of Colton, NY and Howard Jeffery Swaim of Odessa; three brothers:  Teddy Joel Carson of Johnson City, TX, Henry Fonda Carson of Mason, TX, and Roy Dale Watson of Austin, TX; four grandchildren:  Stefanie Sheffield, Corby Swaim, Casey Swaim, and Amber Swaim; and three great-grandchildren:  Kourtney Sheffield, Shelby Sheffield, and Danica Barnett.

Funeral services will be 10:00 am Thursday, November 8, 2007 at Acres West Funeral Chapel with Brother Clydell Chapman officiating.  Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.  Arrangements are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to Home Hospice, 516 N. Texas Ave. Odessa, TX 79761.

Nate Cawley

Nathan G. Cawley, age 69, passed away Monday, November 5, 2007 at his residence in Odessa.  He was born February 21, 1938 in Grandview, TX to the late J.L. and Lorene Vernell (Abshire) Cawley.

Nate was a hard worker and was self-employed for 37 years as an oilfield mechanic.  When not doing mechanic work for oilfield companies, he and his trusty sidekick, Buddy the dog, worked on classic cars.  He was an outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing and camping.  He was a member of the Elks Lodge and attended Freewill Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and his brothers:  Bill Cawley, Wayne “Slim” Cawley, and Jim Cawley, and one sister:  Mildred Cawley.

Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife, Ann Cawley; one son:  Bill Foreman; two daughters:  Cassandra Cawley and Sonya DeGeer; one brother:  Terry Morris Cawley and wife Judy, all of Odessa; five grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, and many, many dear friends.

A funeral service to honor Nate’s memory will be held 2 pm Wednesday, November 7, 2007 at the Acres West Funeral Chapel with Brothers Jimmy Braswell, John M. Hancock and Sister Renee Philips officiating.  Pallbearers will include:  Boyd Brawley, Glen Brown, Jack DeGeer, Bud Evans, Bill Foreman, and Kenneth Imler.  Honorary pallbearers will be Daniel Allen, Jim Breeding, Benny Goff, Mike Pool, Danny Sanchez, and Jerry Tucker.  Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.  Services are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel.

Bobby Joe Poe

Bobby Joe Poe passed from this life on Sunday, November 11, 2007 at his residence in Odessa at the age of 67. He was born Friday, August 23, 1940 in Placid, McCulloch County, Texas to Hulen Willis Poe and Myrtle Juanita (Turnell) Poe.

He served his country in the US Army until he was honorably discharged in 1968. He married the love of his life, Delma Lea Ellzey, August 12, 1960 in Odessa. He was retired, but had spent many years in the oil field industry working as a truck driver and welder. Bobby was quite the jokester, but about this he was serious:  he was always right – never wrong.

Those left to cherish his love and memories are his sons:  Thomas J. Poe and wife Susan of Odessa and Cory L. Poe and wife Diann of Kaufman, TX; three daughters:  Barbette Poe Pierson and husband Derrick of Albuquerque, NM and Bobbie Josette Poe and Dedrette Dawn Poe, both of Odessa; one brother:  Lavon G. Poe of Vernon, TX; three sisters:  Laverne Dereberry and Beverly Nichols, both of Joshua, TX and Connie Hardin of Meridian, TX; and eight grandchildren:  David, Joey, and Billy Poe; JT, Cody, and Chad Pierson; and Gerry and JoLea Poe.

Bobby was preceded in death by his wife of 45 years, Delma Lea Ellzey Poe, his parents, and two brothers:  Perry Poe and Gene Dale Poe.

A formal visitation will be Wednesday, November 14, 2007 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm.  Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 pm, Thursday, November 15, 2007 at Acres West Funeral Chapel with his brother, Pastor L.G. Poe officiating. Pallbearers will be grandsons:  David Poe, Joey Poe, Billy Poe, JT Pierson, and Cody Pierson, and nephew, Andy Hudson.  Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.  Reception and family visitation will follow at Acres West's 24 Hour Chapel. 

Arrangements are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel.  If desired, memorials may be made to the American Lung Association.

Bonnie Lee "Boots" Scott
Bonnie Lee "Boots" Scott age 89 of Kermit died November 14, 2007 at a friend's home in Odessa.  He was born August 27, 1918 in Milo, OK to William T. Scott and Elnora (Hancock) Scott. 

He served our country in the US Army during WWII and the Korean Conflict and was honored with a Purple Heart.  He was a retired roustabout foreman for Bass Enterprises.

Boots is survived by two sons:  Joe Scott of Roswell, NM and Robert Lee Scott of Odessa; one brother:  P.W. Scott of Oklahoma City, OK; one sister:  Trelma Scott of Arkansas; and seven grandchildren.

 
Services will be held at a later date and are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel of Odessa.
