|Royce W. Jackson|
Funeral services for Royce Wilson Jackson will be 2:00 pm Saturday, December 29, 2007 at Acres West Funeral Chapel officiated by Bro. Jimmy Braswell. Visitation at the funeral home will begin Thursday, December 27, 2007 from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm.
Royce was born February 6, 1939 in Gilmer, Upshur County, TX to Clarence and Jessie (Wilson) Jackson. He and his younger brother, Russell, were raised in Mansfield, LA. They lost their father when Royce was only 19. Clarence died from a coronary thrombosis at the age of 48. Their mother, however, lived to the age of 91. She joined Clarence in 2000.
Royce attended college in Kilgore, TX and LA Tec in Rustin. He was in the Coast Guard Reserves for eight years. He was an Elks member for 33 years, and in the American Legion for two years. He lived in Farmington, NM from 1963 until 1987. He then moved to Las Vegas, NV, which turned out to be his favorite place to be until moving to Odessa. He retired as a Union Millwright Welder, but had many different jobs throughout his life. His favorite was wheeling and dealing, buying and selling – anything and everything from real estate to interesting items he had made by hand or dumpster diving goodies.
Royce was a lover of people – he loved them no matter if they were rich or poor. He helped many friends in need through money, manual labor, or lending a sympathetic ear. He enjoyed clowning around with children – who looked up to him as a cowboy hero. His cousin, Keith, remembers being in awe of him. When Keith was 15 years old, Royce and his family drove up in Royce’s black 1963 Chevy for a visit. What beautiful boots Royce had on! When Keith told Royce he couldn’t ride his bike because it was broken, they went to “take a look at it" and Royce fixed it.
Royce was a rare person who will be missed by many, many friends and loved ones, especially Delores Van Ryan.
Royce – no road is too long, if one has friends like you.
