Marna Joan Kiser

Marna Joan (Burns) Kiser, aged 78, went to be with her Lord Jesus on March 1, 2008 at 9:50 p.m. in Hospice House in Odessa after a lengthy illness.  She was born on November 2, 1929 in Marion, Indiana to the late Wayne and Elva (Seacat) Burns.

Marna graduated from Converse High School – Class of 1947. Shortly thereafter she began working in the advertising department of National China, a restaurant supply company in Marion, and continued there until she married Bob Kiser on April 5, 1953.  What followed was a journey through life that proved to be more fascinating than she could have ever imagined.  Bob had been working in Venezuela so after being married a few days they flew there and set up housekeeping in Caracas.  Fourteen years later, and after having three children, they transferred to Australia.  After 5 years there, they moved to Carlinville, Illinois where Bob worked in an Exxon coal affiliate.  In 1980 Bob was transferred to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia where they lived until they finally found their way to west Texas and their present home in Odessa.  Marna faithfully followed her husband around the world, forming deep friendships wherever they lived.

Marna is the mother of three children:  Jane, born on November 23, 1954; Kurt, born November 10, 1958; and, Karl, born July 8, 1962.  Marna was a caring and wonderful mother who deeply loved her family.  Her strength was in continually showing interest in all the little details of their lives, giving them the gift of knowing they were truly loved.

Marna was blessed with a beautiful singing voice.  A memorable moment was when she sang to Bob at their wedding.   In her earlier years, she loved to sing in church and play the piano.  She was a wonderful cook and, particularly in Venezuela, her home was always open to missionaries who were passing through the area.  She had the gift of hospitality.

Though Marna and Bob worshipped in various churches throughout the years, during the last few years they have attended First Church of God in Odessa.

Marna lived a good life and she will be dearly missed.  She leaves behind a sister, Janice (Larry) Kendall in Anderson, Indiana; her husband Bob; her children, Jane (Bill) Steadman, Kurt, and Karl; five grandchildren: Jason, Christopher (Becky), and Colton Kiser; Billy and Brian Steadman; several  nieces and nephews; former daughter-in-law Jamie Kiser and special “family member” Tammy Sparkman.

The family wants to show special appreciation to the care-givers,  Gloria Chabera, Tilly Darcy, and Teri Munoz, who worked diligently in our home to make Marna’s life as comfortable as possible.  Over the past few years, they have become a part of our family.  A special thanks also to Hospice House in Odessa who provided a caring and comforting environment for Marna to spend her last days here on earth.

A Memorial Service was held Monday, March 3, 2008 at 1:00 p.m. at the First Church of God at 2212 East 11th Street in Odessa.  Funeral services will be 10:00 am Wednesday, March 5, 2008 at Needham-Storey-Wampner Funeral Chapel in Marion, Indiana.  Interment will follow at Estate of Serenity Cemetery.  Arrangements are entrusted Needham-Storey-Wampner Funeral Service in Marion and Acres West Funeral Chapel in Odessa.

Memorials may be made to Hospice House Foundation, Inc. (903 N. Sam Houston Avenue, Odessa, TX  79761) or the First Church of God (2212 E. 11th Street, Odessa, TX 79761).
