Geanita Anell Vera
Geanita Anell Vera, age 47, passed away Wednesday, June 4, 2008 at Medical Center Hospital of Odessa.  She was born in Odessa to Clayton Dee Simmons and Josephine Gonzales Simmons.  She was a secretary.
 
She is survived by her husband:  Pedro Vera; her mother:  Josephine Simmons; one daughter:  Anna Vera; one brother:  Avery Jason Simmons; and one sister:  Tara Denise Simmons, all of Odessa.
 
Memorial services will be 6 pm Saturday, June 7, 2008 at Acres West Funeral Chapel, 8115 W. University.  Arrangements are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel.

Raul P. Marquez
Raul P. Marquez, age 76, died Tuesday, June 10, 2008 at Regency Hospital.  He was born in Casa de Piedras, Mexico June 14, 1931.  He was a rancher.
 
He is survived by his wife:  Eustolia Marquez of Presidio; five sons:  Raul Marquez, Moises Marquez, Pablo Marquez, Esteban Marquez, and Gilberto Marquez, all of La Paz, Mexico; three daughters:  Socorro Marquez, Dominga Marquez, and Maria de Jesus Marquez, all of La Paz, Mexico; one brother:  Margarito Marquez of Ojinaga, Mexico; two sisters:  Maria Marquez of Ojinaga, Mexico and Manuela Marquez of La Paz, Mexico; twenty-five grandchildren and twenty-four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents:  Apolonio and Maria (Padilla) Marquez.

 
Services will be held in La Paz, Mexico with interment to follow at La Paz de Mexico, Municipio de Coyame, Chihuahua Mexico.  Arrangements in Odessa are with Acres West Funeral Chapel.

Oma Barton Wakefield
Oma Barton Wakefield, age 101, died Tuesday, June 10, 2008 at Hospice House of Odessa.  She was born June 8, 1907 in Winters, TX to Isaac Murphy Barton and Maude Estella (Cain) Barton.  She was formerly a cashier for Banker's Life in Fort Worth.  She was a member of the Worldwide Church of God.
 
She is survived by her son:  Charles B. Wakefield of Odessa; one brother:  Bill Barton of Odessa; two granddaughters:  Becky Wakefield and Cyndie Mace and husband Larry and two great-granddaughters:  Felisha and Allie Mace.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers:  Clyde Barton and wife Jenette, JC Barton, and John D. Barton; one sister:  Ernestine Barton; one son:  William B. Wakefield; and a young grandson:  Hal Peck Wakefield.

 
Graveside Services are set for 2 pm Thursday, June 12, 2008 at Ector County Cemetery.  Arrangements are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel.

Emma M. Penny

Emma M. Penny, 97, went peacefully to be with the Lord on Friday, June 6, 2008, in Ruston, Louisiana.  
 
She was a longtime resident of Odessa, Texas, moving to the city in 1935 from east Texas with her husband, the late E.P. Penny. Following a brief illness in 2001, she moved to live with her son James in Ruston.  
 
The E.P. and Emma Home is recognized as a landmark by the Heritage of Odessa Foundation for opening their home to African-American travelers during a period of segregation. Mrs. Penny was a long-time member of Parks Memorial Church of God in Christ, where she served as church mother and district missionary until her retirement in 1997. She is recognized as a Minority Trailblazer by The Castanettes Social Civic and Arts Club of Odessa.  
 
She is survived by her son, James E. Penny and his wife, Wanda; three grandchildren, Edward J. O'Neal (Kathy) of Dallas, Shawn C. Penny (Doris) of Texarkana, Semaj Penny-Anderson (Jermane) of Beaumont; four great-grandchildren, Kedisha, Jeniffer, Donta' and Jade; a host of nephews (great and great-great) and nieces (great and great-great).
 
The viewing of her body is scheduled in the Kings Funeral Home Chapel in Ruston, LA on Wednesday, June 11, from 5 pm to 7 pm. Her body will be returned to Odessa for the official service. Her body will lay in repose at Parks Memorial Church of God in Christ, 708 S. Humble St., from 9 am to 11 am, Saturday, June 14. The funeral service will begin at 11 am, Superintendent W.C. Kenan officiating.
Arrangements are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel.

Jacquelyn Hope Bustamante

Jacquelyn Hope Bustamante, an infant, was born and was whisked away by the angels straight to the arms of Jesus June 16, 2008 at Medical Center Hospital in Odessa. 
 
She is survived by her parents:  Joel Bustamante, Jr. and Alma Baeza of Odessa; two brothers:  Nathan and Jonathan Bustamante of Odessa; paternal grandparents:  Joel Bustamante and Rosa Urias of Odessa; and maternal grandparents:  Ruth Garcia of Odessa and Samuel Baeza of San Carlos, Mexico.
 
Rosary will be said 7 pm Sunday, June 22, 2008 at Acres West Funeral Chapel.  Graveside services will be 10 am Monday, June 23, 2008 at Rosehill Cemetery officiated by Father Joe Uecker.  Arrangements are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel.

Richlee Jay “Rich” Gonzales

Richlee Jay “Rich” Gonzales was taken from this world unexpectedly, Thursday, June 19, 2008 at the age of 28.  He was born March 8, 1980 in Austin, TX.  He worked as a commercial electrician. 

Rich is survived by three sons:  Damian Gonzales, Jaden Gonzales, and Ethan Gonzales, all of Odessa; one daughter:  Aliyah Gonzales of Odessa; his mother:  Gloria Cook of Florence, KY; father:  Richard Gonzales and wife Emma of Odessa; paternal grandmother:  Henrietta Gonzales of Odessa; maternal grandmother:  Lillie Valdez of Morrison, CO; three brothers:  Richard Gonzales of Ft. Worth, TX, Tony Saucedo of Dallas, TX, and Eric Henry of Florence, KY; six sisters:  Naomi Asselin of Tucson, AZ, Richann Watson and husband Tyler of Batavia, OH, Liz Mullady and husband Seth of Tucson, AZ; and Linda Henry, Tabitha Cook, and Christa Cook, all of Florence, KY; two nieces, five nephews, numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins and innumerable friends. 

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather:  Louis Valdez and his paternal grandfather:  Dick Gonzales. 

Funeral services will be 10:00 am Sunday, June 22, 2008 at Acres West Funeral Chapel officiated by Pastor Tom Pickett.  Interment will follow at Western Roses Memorial Park, 4100 N. FM 1788.  Arrangements are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel. 

Rich was a wonderful person, evidenced by his many friends.  Those friends have been so much help and support for our family during this difficult time.  We cannot thank you enough for all you have done.

Maria Carmen Lopez Vazquez

Maria Carmen Lopez Vazquez, age 84, died Thursday, June 19, 2008 at Hospice House of Odessa.  She was born July 16, 1923 on San Cayetano Ranch in Yuriria, Guanajuato, Mexico to Clotilde and Nicolaza (Rangel) Lopez.  She was a homemaker.

Services will be held at a later date in Mexico.  Arrangements in Odessa are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Home.  Arrangements in Mexico are with Mendoza Martinez Funeraria in Yuriria, Guanajuato, Mexico.

Gregory Scott Covert

Gregory Scott Covert, Beloved Husband, Father, Son, and Brother passed away on Saturday, June 21st, 2008 of heart failure.  Greg was a wonderful husband and father, being blessed with a child after the age of 40. He loved his family and showed unconditional love to all. He was preceded in death by his beloved mother, Wanda Covert, who passed away in 1998. 

Greg is survived by his wife Marie Covert of Odessa, son: Paul M. Covert of Odessa, step-daughter: Heather Davis of Odessa, his father: Harold Covert and wife Ethel of Odessa, two brothers: Jeffrey Covert and wife Jeanette of Odessa and Michael Covert and wife Grace Shan of Plano, TX, one grandchild: Isen Maggard of Odessa, and many beloved nieces, nephews and extended family members.  He will be missed dearly by his family and friends.  

Greg was an avid sports fan who loved the Stars, the Spurs, the Jackalopes, and especially the Washington Redskins, much to the chagrin of his family!   Greg graduated from Permian High School in 1979 and received an associate’s degree from Odessa College. Greg was a co-owner of After Hours Rental Mart, the local John Deere dealer, with his brother Jeff for 21 years and enjoyed the many people that he helped every day, usually with a smile and a story.  

Honorary pallbearers will be Jerry Mitchell, Tim McDonald, Robert Prince, Gene True, Glen Perkins, Ralph Garcia, Tommy Whitney, Brent Womack and Wes Huse.   

Family visitation will be 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm Tuesday, June 24, 2008 at Acres West Funeral Chapel.  His memory will be honored in a memorial service 11:00 am Wednesday, June 25, 2008 at Chapel Hill Baptist Church officiated by Rev. Jeff Box.  He will be interred privately at Sunset Memorial Gardens.  Arrangements are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel. 

In lieu of flowers, donations would be appreciated to an education trust established at Southwest Heritage Credit Union in the name of Paul Covert. 

Gilberto Galindo Zuniga
Gilberto Galindo Zuniga, age 53, died Saturday, June 21, 2008 at Odessa Regional Hospital.  He was born in Sierra Mojada, Mexico to Juan Zuniga Rodarte and Julietta Galindo Villarreal Zuniga.  He was a house painter.
 
Graveside memorial services will be held at Cementerio de Cuatro Cienegas, Coahuila Mexico at a later date.  Arrangements are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel.

Omar Cruz, Jr.

Omar Cruz, Jr., age 10 of Odessa, passed from this life Sunday June 22, 2008 at Covenant Hospital in Lubbock. He was born August 29, 1997 in El Paso, TX to Omar Cruz and Elizabeth Estrada. He attended Burleson Elementary in Odessa. 

He is survived by his parents:  Omar and Elizabeth; one brother:  Jonathan; two sisters: Jennifer and Stephanie; his grandparents:  Antonia and Burt Gidcumb of El Paso and Emma and Juventino Estrada of Odessa; and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins. 

A prayer service will be 7:00 pm Wednesday, June 25, 2008 at Casa de Oración.  Funeral services will be 10:00 am Thursday, June 26, 2008 at Casa de Oración.  Interment will follow as Los Angeles Section of Ector County Cemetery.  Pallbearers will include:  Raul Martinez, Daniel Estrada, Juan Estrada, Juventino Estrada, Jr., Mario Cruz and Roman Cruz.  Arrangements are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel.

Roger Allen Byer
Roger Allen Byer passed away Monday, June 23, 2008 at his home in Odessa.  He was born in Odessa April 19, 2008 and was the apple of his daddy's eye for  2 months and 4 days.
 
He is survived by his proud parents David Louis Byer, Jr. and Christina Marie Francis of Odessa; sister:  Kelsea KayLee Evans of Odessa; and grandparents:  Mary Kay Martin of San Antonio, TX, Charles Martin of Tyler, TX and Cindy Adams of Odessa.
 
Graveside services are 2:00 pm Thursday, June 26, 2008 at Rosehill section of Ector County Cemetery officiated by Pastor Michael Bartlett.  Arrangements were entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel.
