|Morris Reid Smith, Jr.|
Morris Reid Smith, Jr. passed from his earthly bounds on October
10, 2012, at the Hospice House after a long and courageous battle
He was surrounded by his family in his final days as he drifted into the arms of the Lord.
Morris was born to Mildred and Morris R. Smith in Ector County Texas, on September 17, 1933. He graduated from Odessa High School and married Mary Catherine Welborn on February 8, 1952. He served our country in the US Army from 1957 to 1959, and was called to serve again from 1961 to 1962. He later earned an Associates of Arts degree from Odessa College.
Morris had many careers over the years. He spent many days away from home toiling in the oil fields. Later in life he had an insurance sales business and owned several rental properties where he worked tirelessly up until almost the very end. He loved laughter, and loved to make people laugh. He went so far as saying to his grand-daughters while on his death bed, "I don't get out much anymore." which turned a tearful situation into laughter. He always entertained his family with stories and tall-tales, and although no one will ever be able to sort out the fact from the fiction. One thing no one ever doubted was that he loved God, his family and his country. He loved politics and writing letters to the editor. He even threw his hat into the ring in a race for Justice of the Peace back in the 70's, where he earned his nickname, The Judge. Morris taught his grandchildren to fish and hunt and shared his love of the old style country music. He also enjoyed working on his own vehicles and gadgets. He fancied himself quite the southern engineer.
He was currently a member of Sherwood Church of Christ where he loved to sing songs of praise.
Morris is survived by his wife, Mary Catherine, three children, Marilyn Smith Hancock and husband Roger of Odessa; Morris Alfred "Al" Smith and wife Tammy of Odessa; and Marci Smith Key of Houston. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Doris Foote and Emily Smith.
