Leonard Mendel Nathan

Leonard Mendel Nathan, age 67, of Lubbock, passed away on Thursday, June 13, 2013 at Hospice House of Odessa.  He was born in Houston, TX on November 22, 1945 to Sol and Burtha (Lipp) Nathan.  He was an entrepreneur and jack of all trades.  He was a US Army Veteran.

Leonard was quite a character, flamboyant and funny – an unpaid comedian.  He was always willing to help out others.  With piercing green eyes and fine stylish clothing, he made an impression wherever he went.  He was very proud of an “over the top” gameroom sale that he had just closed for around a half a million dollars.  His dog “Stinky” was his loving sidekick for the last three years.

He is survived by his daughter:  Mattea Nathan of Lubbock; and nephew:  David Lidsky of Lubbock.

His parents:  Sol and Burtha Nathan; and his sister:  Roseann Lidsky, preceded him in death.

Memorial services will be held in Houston at a later date.

Arrangements are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel, 8115 W University Blvd. Odessa.

Charley Mack Bailey

Charley Mack Bailey, 75, passed away June 14, 2013 at his residence in Odessa. He was born in Talpa, Texas. He worked as a cook and a waiter.

Those left to cherish his memories are his sisters: Paulina Wright of Odessa and Kathy Fox of Wichita Falls, Texas; and numerous nieces and nephews.

 Graveside Memorial Services will be held at a later date at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Anson, Texas. Services are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel, 8115 W. University Blvd, Odessa, Texas.

M Machuca

Manuel "Machuca" Villalobos Machuca, Jr.

Manuel Villalobos Machuca, Jr. age 53, of Odessa, passed from this life on Saturday, June 15, 2013 at Medical Center Hospital.  He was born in Pecos on November 7, 1959 to Manuel Machuca, Sr. and the late Nieves (Villalobos) Machuca.  He was a welder in the oilfield.

Manuel was a believer in God.  A hard worker and a loving father and son, he enjoyed caring for his Dad.  He was a good hearted man, very down to earth, but also free spirited.  Manuel was a joker and a talented artist, who loved to draw.  He was always active and remained very physically fit. 

Those left to cherish his memory are his father:  Manuel Machuca, Sr. of Odessa; son:  Manuel Machuca, III, of Odessa; daughter:  Janette Villanueva and husband Santiago of Odessa; brother:  Alfredo Machuca of Odessa; three sisters:  Lupe Gutierrez and husband Fernando Leal of Crystal City, and Nicole Avila and Nancy Machuca, both of Odessa; four grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.

His mother, Nieves Avila, and sister, Anna Maria Machuca, preceded him in death.

Rosary will be recited at the funeral home, Acres West Funeral Chapel, 8115 W. University Blvd. Odessa, TX on Monday evening, June 17, 2013 at 7:30 pm.  Funeral services are set for Tuesday, June 18, 2013 at Acres West Funeral Chapel, officiated by Joel Madden.  Arrangements are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel.

J Laijas
Jan (Marker) Laijas

Jan (Marker) Laijas, age 58, departed this life too soon on Monday, June 17, 2013 at Medical Center Hospital, Odessa, TX. She was born in Hobbs, NM on July 16, 1954 to Barbara Ann and Bob Marker.  

Jan lived much of her life in Hobbs where she graduated high school in 1972, moving to Odessa with her husband David Laijas in 1985. She tended bar most of her adult life, working locally at the Elks Lodge and the American Legion where she really loved her "Vets”. In 1992, she attended nursing school at Odessa College where she received her RN. Jan was a nurse on 5 Central at Medical Center Hospital for 18 years.  Although she was loved for her endless compassion and wonderful heart, it was as a nurse that she really shined. Her passion was to care for and comfort others in their time of need. She will be greatly missed.  

In addition to her beloved mother Barbara and father Bob, she is also preceded in death by her step father Jerry Daniel.
 
Those left to cherish her memory are her husband: David Laijas of Odessa; her sons: Matthew Cleveland of Odessa, Jon Newton of Odessa, Toby Laijas of Fort Worth; one daughter: Nora Laijas of Odessa; six grandchildren and one great grandchild. She is also survived by her brother: Gus Marker and wife Carmen of Hobbs; one sister: Marilayne Marker Millwood and husband Bruce of Odessa, and two foster sisters: Vickie Lee of Lubbock, TX and Robbie Morrison of Roswell, NM. 

Her memorial service will be at 2:00 pm Friday, June 21, 2013 at Acres West Funeral Chapel, 8115 W. University Blvd., Odessa, TX.

Pascuala (Espinoza) Alvarez

Pascuala "Chelo" Alvarez, age 79, of Odessa, Texas, died Wednesday, June 19, 2013, at Castleview Nursing and Rehabilitation in Stephenville, Texas.  She was born April 14, 1934 in Casa Piedra, Texas to the late Ventura and Concepsion (Rodriguez) Espinoza.   

Pascuala was a devoted Catholic. She was also a very loving and caring grandmother who would make up stories to get her grandchildren and family to move closer to where she lived. Pascuala was loved and she will be greatly missed by friends and family. 

Those left to cherish her love and memory are her daughters:  Elsie Alvarez and husband Jose Saldierna of Stephenville and Maribel Huerta-Baeza and husband Juan Carlos of Fort Worth; two sons:  Demetrio Alvarez, Jr. and wife Marina and Ramon Alvarez, all of Stephenville; ten grandchildren:  Greg, Daniel, and Sergio Velez, Marina Saldierna, Crystal, Angel, Adrian, Aaron, and Carina Marie Alvarez, and Karisma Cheli Sierra; and ten great-grandchildren.    

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband:  Demetrio Ramirez Alvarez. 

Rosary will be recited at 24 hours Acres West Funeral Chapel, 8115 W. University Blvd. Odessa, on Sunday, June 23, 2013 at 7:00 pm.  Funeral mass will be at St. Joseph Catholic Church at 10:00 am Monday, June 24, 2013.  Interment will follow at Peaceful Garden of Ector County Cemetery.  Arrangements are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel.

May Phillipps

May Phillipps “Nams”, age 75, of Midland, passed away Wednesday, June 19, 2013 at Midland Memorial Hospital.  She was born November 5, 1937 in Marie, Arkansas to Charlie Riddle and Clara Collins Riddle. 

While living in Tatum, NM, May received her beautician’s license and worked as a beautician for many years.  When her children were teenagers, she moved to Texas.  She also lived in Lake Whitney and retired from the Rocker B Ranch in Reagan County.  When she moved to Casa Grande, Arizona to be closer to her mother, she met the love of her life:  Douglas McArthur Phillipps and they were married on June 21, 1996.  May worked at Walmart while working for her CNA’s license.  She loved traveling all over Arizona with her husband.  After his passing on January 19, 2006, May moved back to Midland to be close to her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.  She enjoyed the ceramics bunch class at the Senior Center in Midland, TX with Sherrie and Bill.

Those left to cherish her love and memory are her son:  Jimmie Dell Proctor of San Angelo; daughter:  Vicki Matthews and husband Jackie of Odessa; sister:  Betty Itano of Reno, NV; grandchildren:  Jennifer White and husband Jimmy, Michael Moad, Cheryl Moad, and Savannah Proctor; and great-grandchildren:  Haylee Phillips and Hayden White; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents:  Charlie and Clara Riddle; husband:  Douglas McArthur Phillipps; four brothers:  Gerald Riddle, Billy Riddle, Charlie Riddle and Dean Riddle; and two sisters:  June Houk and Peggy Johnson.

Memorial services will be at Manor Park Chapel, 2208 N. Loop 250, Midland, TX on Friday, June 21, 2013 at 1:00 pm, officiated by Rev. Bill Billett.

Arrangements are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel of Odessa.

In lieu of flowers, May requested that donations be made to the St. Joseph Indian School in South Dakota (her favorite charity).

Kevin “Mark” Thomas

Kevin “Mark” Thomas, age 53, of Odessa, passed away on Thursday, June 20, 2013 at Medical Center Hospital.  He was born in Durango, CO on October 30, 1959 to Genevieve (Born) Thomas and the late George William Thomas.  He was a driller in the oilfield.

Mark is survived by his wife:  Sheryl (Burke) Thomas of Odessa; mother:  Genevieve “Jimmie” Thomas of Odessa; and brother:  George Steven Thomas of Odessa.

No services will be held at this time.  Arrangements are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel.   

M Bryant

Mary Alice Bryant

Mary Alice Bryant passed away on June 25, 2013 at Select Specialty Hospital in Midland. Mary was born in Telephone, Texas on Friday, September 13, 1935 to the late General Aganaldo Stroud and Mamie Elizabeth (Hindsley) Stroud.  She was a nurse, retiring after over 40 years of loving service. 

Mary enjoyed reading, working crossword puzzles, and was a pro at playing cards, checkers and dominoes.  A formidable opponent, she never threw a game, you had to earn a victory.  Mary was an avid bargain hunter, who could find the best deal wherever she was shopping whether at the dollar store, grocery store or garage sales.  She had the old fashioned skill of being able to make something from nothing and she loved collecting recipes and recipe books.  When the urge hit her, she would bake for days.  She enjoyed her cup of coffee and a Camel.

Those left to cherish her memories are her son: Billy Doyal Mercer  and wife Oie of Odessa; daughters: Elizabeth Mercer Carlin and husband Craig of Odessa, Marlo Rogan and husband Chris of Allentown, PA,  and Nancy Graham of Charlotte; sixteen grandchildren and twenty-six great- grandchildren.  She is also survived by her little sidekick pup:  Booger.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband:  Billy Dale Mercer; two of her children:  Ronnie Dale Mercer and Tammy Marie Mercer; sister:  Lou Stroud Lakey; and brother:  Leslie Stroud.

The family will receive friends at Acres West Funeral Chapel on Thursday evening, June 27, 2013 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm.  Graveside Services will be10:00 am Friday, June 28, 2013 at Peaceful Garden section of Ector County Cemetery, officiated by Bro. Bob Porterfield.   Arrangements are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel of Odessa. 

S Galindo

Serapia Valenzuela “Nena” Galindo

Serapia Valenzuela “Nena” Galindo, age 88, of Midland, passed away on Wednesday, June 26, 2013 at Midland Memorial Hospital.  She was born in Manuel Benavides, Chihuahua, Mexico on February 26, 1925.  She was a homemaker and a member of the Catholic Church.

Serapia was a loveable, loving mother and the best grandma ever.  Her family was very important to her and she loved all of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren wholeheartedly.  She was a people person who loved to visit.  Always joking around, you could count on her to make you laugh.  Serapia never cared for cooking and usually left that up to her husband Pedro.  She did enjoy washing and ironing.  If you dropped by her home, you would often find her ironing.  Dancing was her favorite activity and she was always wanting to go dancing, even right up until she passed away.  Six years ago, she moved to Rockwood Manor Nursing Home where she made a whole new batch of friends.  Her neighbors there were much loved.

Those left to cherish her memory and carry on her legacy are her son:  Humberto Galindo of Odessa; daughters:  Socorro Gomes of Ojinaga, Orfa Silva of Chihuahua, CH, MX, and Maria Mancha of Odessa; brother:  Fernando Valenzuela, Jr. of Manuel Benavides, CH, MX; sister:  Luzmila Valenzuela of Odessa; twenty-two grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren, and three great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents:  Fernando and Hijinia (Lujan) Valenzuela; husband:  Pedro S. Galindo; sons:  Soloman Galindo and Martin Galindo; daughter:  Teresa Galindo; and brothers:  Constancio Valenzuela, Mauro Valenzuela, and David Valenzuela.

Rosary will be recited at Acres West Funeral Chapel on Friday, June 28, 2013 at 7:30 pm.  Funeral services will be on Saturday, June 29, 2013 at 2:00 pm at Acres West Funeral Chapel.  Interment will follow privately at Rose Hill Garden of Ector County Cemetery.  Arrangements are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel, 8115 W. University Blvd. Odessa, TX.

Helen Sieglinde Fore (April 26, 1949 ~ June 26, 2013)
Helen Sieglinde Fore, 64, passed away on Wednesday, June 26, 2013. In Odessa, Texas. She was born in Frankfort Germany on April 26, 1949 to Charles Decker and Gertrude Wolffe.

Helen loved her Soap Operas and the Price is Right. She loved family gatherings, traveling, watching old western movies and listening to good old country music. When her TV shows were over, she would retire to the kitchen where she enjoyed a game of solitaire. She was an excellent cook who always cooked from scratch.

Those left to cherish her memories are her mother: Gertrude Decker of Evansville, IN., son: Bryant and Wife Windy Quilodran Beavers of Odessa; two daughters: Michelle Smith of Odessa and Amy Hernandez and husband Art of Andrews., five brothers: Charles Decker Jr. and Phillip Decker both of Evansville IN, James Decker, John Decker and Robert Decker all of Madison IN.; one sister: Linda Decker of Booneville, IN.

She is preceded in death by her father:  Charles Decker; her husband:  Raymond Fore and granddaughter:  Kayli Galindo.

Funeral Services are scheduled for 10:00 am, Monday, July 1, 2013 at Acres West Funeral Chapel officiated by Rev. Jimmy Braswell. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Arrangements are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel of Odessa.
