Mildred Mize

Mildred Mize, 86, of Odessa died Thursday, December 26, 2013.  She was born in Abilene, Texas. She was a cosmetologist and owned her own business.

Survivors are her son: Roger Mize; 3 Grandchildren and 3 Great Grandchildren.

Graveside services are scheduled for 1:00 pm, Tuesday, December 31, 2013 at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Odessa and a Memorial will be held 2:00 pm, Thursday, January 2, 2014 at St. Luke’s Methodist Church located at 1601 E. 42nd St. , Odessa, Texas officiated by Brad Bennett. Services are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel.

D Harris
Della Jane Harris

Della Jane Harris, 66, of Odessa passed away on Friday, December 27, 2013 in Odessa. She was born in Charleston, Texas on August 23, 1947 to Hollis and Della May Westerman. Della worked as a CNA at Seabury’s for 20 years.

Della Jane was a dedicated CNA and loved her work, patients, and co-workers. She was preceded in death by six of her seven siblings. She loved to read, she was an avid reader.  Della was a loving grandmother. Her grandkids and great grandkids were her pride and joy. Della will be missed by all who had the joy of knowing her.

Those left to cherish her love and memory are her son: Jason Harris of Odessa; Daughter: Barbara Yantis of Monahans; Brother: Don Westerman of Monahans; 2 Grandchildren and 2 Great Grandchildren.

Services will be held privately. Arrangements are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel.

D E DAWSON 
Donald Edward Dawson, Sr.

Donald Edward Dawson, Sr., 75, passed away on Friday, December 27, 2013 at ORMC in Odessa, Texas. He was born in Davenport, Iowa on August 10, 1938 to Worthy and Edith Dawson. Donald was a retired oilfield floor hand.

After retiring as an oilfield floor hand, Donald worked as a maintenance man at nursing homes. In his younger days he loved camping. As he became older, bingo, video poker, playing cards of any kind and playing pool was a favorite pastime. Donald was a big channel surfer. He loved being outdoors, going to flea markets and drinking a beer on occasion. But above all he loved being with his family.  He will be greatly missed by all.

Those left to cherish his love and memory are his sons: Arin Eugene Dawson and Donald Edward Dawson, Jr.; daughters: Lana Spurgeon, Donna Sue Dawson & husband Jimmy and Kathryn Clayton; 13 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Donald is preceded in death by his wife: Cathy Dawson; son: Tom Holland; and his daughter: Edith Dawson

Graveside services will be 10:00 am Tuesday, December 31, 2013 at the Peaceful Garden section at Ector County Cemetery. Arrangements are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel.

B Sullivan
Bert Rufus Sullivan

Bert Rufus Sullivan went to be with the Lord on Saturday, December 28, 2013.  Bert was born on September 8, 1945, in Waco, Texas, to the late Eli Sullivan and Zelma (Toliver) Sullivan.

Bert moved to Odessa at the age of 11.  He attended Odessa public schools, graduating from Blackshear High School in 1965.  He excelled in football.  He also participated in basketball and track.  Bert was offered a football scholarship to Langston University, but was unable to accept it due to having to fulfill his duty to his country.

Bert served his country and was honorably discharged from the US Navy.  During his service, his tour of duty included serving in Vietnam.  He was also a member of St. James Missionary Baptist Church.  One of Bert’s favorite pastimes, besides sports, was bar-b-queing, and he was a master of it.  The community loved his bar-b-que.  He loved hanging with family and friends.  Bert loved to host fish fries.

Bert was employed by Phillips Petroleum and retired after 22 years.  He was later employed by Greater Opportunities of the Permian Basin (Headstart) as a maintenance supervisor, retiring after 10 years.

Bert was preceded in death by his parents, his step-mother:  Juanita Sullivan; his son:  Sidney Sullivan; brothers:  Eli Sullivan, Jr. “Sonny”, Chris Bradshaw, and Eric Bradshaw, and step-sister:  Connie Lindley.

He leaves to mourn his transition two sons:  Bertran “Skeet” Sullivan and Brent Sullivan, both of Odessa; two daughters:  Lillian Shelton and husband Avrian of Okolona, MS and Brittany Sullivan of Odessa; brothers:  Charles Bradshaw of Houston, Cass Bradshaw of Arlington, and Ricky Bradshaw of Temple; sister:  Barbara Wright and husband Eric of Arlington; aunts:  Lois Combs of San Francisco, CA and Amanda Trylar of Denver, CO; his seven beloved grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Viewing begins on Monday, December 30, 2013 and continues through the week until the service on Thursday.  The family will receive friends at the wake at the funeral home on Tuesday evening, December 31, 2013 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm.  Funeral services are scheduled for 1:00 pm Thursday, January 2, 2014 at St. James Missionary Baptist Church, officiated by Rev. R. T. McNeil.  Interment with military honors will follow at Peaceful Garden Section of Ector County Cemetery.  Arrangements are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel.

Theresa Leeann Settle

Theresa Leeann Settle, 49, passed away peacefully on December 27, 2013 in Odessa.  She was born to Buck Settle and Barbara Smith in Amarillo, Texas on December 16, 1964.  Theresa married Thomas Paul Dunn on August 8, 1980 in Odessa.

Theresa enjoyed sewing and tinkering on the computer. A very outspoken person, she liked Victorian style houses and loved shoes. Her motto was “Try is not in a person’s vocabulary, you either do or you don’t”. Theresa was very grandchild oriented, they were her life line.

A limb has fallen from the family tree. I keep hearing a voice that says, “Grieve not for me. Remember the best times, the laughter, the song. The good life I lived while I was strong. Continue my heritage, I’m counting on you. Keep smiling and surely the sun will shine through. My mind is at ease, my soul is at rest. Remembering all how I truly was blessed. Coninue traditions no matter how small. Go on with your life don’t worry about falls. I miss you all dearly so keep up your chin. Until the day comes we’re together again.”

Those left to cherish her memories are her husband: Thomas Paul Dunn of Odessa, son: Danny Paul Dunn of Killeen, daughters: Ashlee Dawn Moss and husband Heath and Brandi Chantel Dunn all of Odessa, brother: Danny Settle of Bandera, two sisters: Belinda Staats of Odessa and Amanda Stewert of Carlsbad, NM, and 13 grandchildren.

Services are to be at a later date. Services are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel, 8115 W. University Blvd, Odessa.

Ernestina “Erne” Muñoz Gardea

Ernestina “Erne” Muñoz Gardea, passed away peacefully on December 28, 2013 in her home. Ernestina was born to Juan and Rosa Lujan Munoz on April 21, 1961 in Ojinaga, Mexico.

Ernestina “Erne” loved to listen to music and loved to cook. One of Erne’s hobbies was to watch Ryan “be bad”.  She refused to let the parents correct her grandkids and referred to her eldest daughter as “just a step mom”. Erne protected her middle child and spoiled her “Gera”.  She always called her sisters “Chamacas” and told her son he was the king.

Those left to cherish her memories are her son: Gerardo Gardea of Odessa, daughters: Lisset and Yudith Gardea both of Odessa, brother: Jesus Munoz of Odessa, sisters: Maria Elena Rodriguez of Odessa, Irene Munoz of Odessa, Imelda Fierro of Carlbad, NM, Josefina Navarrete of Hobbs, NM, Francisca Lopez of Odessa, and three grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband:  Oscar Gardea, Sr., and her son:  Oscar Gardea, Jr.

Rosary will be recited on Monday, December 30, 2013 at 7:00 p.m. at Acres West Funeral Chapel. Funeral Services are Tuesday, December 31, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, officiated by Father Lorenzo Hatch. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Arrangements are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel, 8115 W. University, Odessa.  

S Gonzales
Sisto Antonio Gonzales

Sisto Antonio Gonzales, age 72, of Odessa, passed away on Saturday, December 28, 2013 at Hospice House of Odessa.  He was born in Ft. Stockton, TX on March 28, 1941 to the late Jose Gonzales and Leonides (Salmon) Gonzales, who were owners of Ft. Stockton’s only general store.  Although Sisto had very little formal education, he taught himself.  He also learned English with the help of a coworker.  He worked maintenance at Texas Electric for many years. 

Sisto and his wife Elfida (Duarte) Gonzales were both raised in Ft. Stockton.  They never met, however, until they both lived in Odessa, where they married at St. Joseph Catholic Church on October 11, 1962. When Elfida passed away, Sisto became their son, Isidro’s, protector and sole caretaker.  He was always there for Isi and guarded him with loving care.  Isi and Sisto could laugh and talk for hours and Isi would give him a hug and a kiss when he headed out.  Sisto was a diehard Dallas Cowboys fan.

Sisto is survived by his son:  Isidro Gonzales of Odessa and his sister:  Bernarda Sanchez of Odessa.

He was preceded in death by his wife and parents, as well as an infant son:  Pedro Gonzales, and many brothers and sisters.

Memorial Mass will be 1:00 pm, Friday, January 3, 2014 at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, officiated by Father Mark Woodruff.  Arrangements are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel and Crematory.

J Hall
John Martin Hall

John Martin Hall, age 41, of Odessa, passed away at Medical Center Hospital on Monday, December 30, 2013.  He was born in Odessa, TX on September 16, 1972 to Louis Martin Hall and Dorothy Marie (Rowe) Hall.  He was a window washer.  John married Amy Lou Sweat in Odessa on October 12, 2007.

John loved music and movies and had an extensive cd and dvd collection.  He was a car guy, who loved his 2001 Camaro Z-28, and also enjoyed four wheelers and bicycles.  John liked to play pool and hang out with family and friends.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife:  Amy Hall of Odessa; two sons:  Charles Chambers and James Havens, both of Odessa; parents:  Louis and Dorothy Hall of Odessa; three sisters:  Patricia Elledge of Odessa, Janice Hillyner of Mack, CO, and Florence Lesly of Odessa; numerous nieces and nephews and countless friends.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday, January 3, 2014 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm.  Funeral services will also be at Acres West Funeral Chapel, 8115 W. University Blvd. Odessa, TX, on Saturday, January 4, 2014 at 10:00 am, officiated by Pastor Rene Phillips.  Arrangements are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel and Crematory.

M Farris
Melba Jo Farris

Melba Jo Farris, age 86, of Odessa, passed from this life into eternity on Monday, December 30, 2013 at Hospice House of Odessa.  She was born on the Pitchfork Ranch in King County, TX on May 28, 1927 to the late Benjamin “B. J.” Reeves and Angie (Caperton) Reeves.  Melba married Donald Wayne Farris in Brownfield, TX on August 20, 1945.  Together they raised two sons and built a life together.  They are members of Crescent Park Baptist Church.  A busy homemaker, Melba Jo still always found the time to volunteer and help others.

Those left to cherish her memory are her husband of over 68 years:  Don Farris of Odessa; son:  Bobbie Joe Farris of Ft. Worth, TX; grandchildren:  Darren W. Farris of Odessa and Damon W. Farris of Los Angeles, CA; several great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandbaby.

In addition to her parents, Melba was preceded in death by her son:  Dale Wayne Farris, who passed in Vietnam, and one grandchild:  Shea Dale Farris.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday evening, January 2, 2014 from 5:00 to 7:00 pm.  Funeral services will be 2:00 pm Friday, January 3, 2013 at Crescent Park Baptist Church, 3000 E. University Blvd, Odessa, officiated by Dr. David T. Miller.  Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.  Arrangements are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel, 8115 W. J Spellings
James Morgan Spellings

James Morgan Spellings, age 60, of Odessa, passed from this life on Monday, December 30, 2013 at Medical Center Hospital.  James was a funny man with an awesome sense of humor.  He went by many nicknames.  He was also known as “Guero”, “Big Jim”, “Jimbo”.   He was born in Oakland, CA to James Wilson Spellings and Margaret (Walling) Spellings.  He married Henrietta “Queta” Valencia Acosta in Midland, TX on Valentines’ Day of 2005.  He worked in construction and retired from working at a concrete crusher plant.  He was a US Navy Veteran.

James was a Harley man.  He loved motorcycles and was content to tinker with cars in his garage.  He looked like a big, tough guy, but was all heart with a kind and gentle soul.  He was a loving person who was always a defender of the helpless and had the innate ability of making you feel within minutes that you were family to him and he had known you forever.   James was very intelligent and gave great advice.  He had gone through many challenges in his life, but had overcome them with the love and support of his wife and family.  James could be counted on to lift your spirits.  His babies were his beloved dogs, Molly (beagle) and Meshack (Siberian husky).

Those left to cherish his love and memory are his wife:  Queta Spellings of Odessa; sons:  James Lee Helton of El Paso and Nathaniel Spellings of Midland; daughters:  Melissa Hernandez ( Frank) of Crescent City, CA, and Ambrosia Spellings, Evelyn Spellings, and Angelina Spellings, all of Odessa; step-daughters:  Ashley Ann Ortega  and partner Mariela Angulo and Amber Dawn Ortega, all of San Antonio and Isa Marie Ramirez of Odessa; sisters:  Sarah Yvonne Jimenez (Antonio) of El Paso and Donna Lee Ballard (Stephan Wolanczyk) of Ohio; grandson:  James Hinojos; step-grandchildren:  Gael and Salma Angulo; niece:  Cynthia Jimenez; nephews:  Robert James Avila and Lawrence A. Medrano, numerous in-laws; and a host of friends.

James was preceded in death by his parents:  James and Margaret Spellings; and his sister:  Donna Lee Spellings.

University Blvd. on Thursday, January 9, 2014 from 5:00 to 8:00 pm.  Funeral services will be 1:00 pm Friday, January 10, 2014 at Acres West Funeral Chapel, officiated by Pastor Elliot.  Arrangements are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel.

Haiden Hazel Lee Williams

Haiden Hazel Lee Williams, baby son of Steven & Heather Williams, of Odessa was born into this life and passed from this life on December 31, 2013.

Those left to cherish his love and memory are his parents: Steven and Heather Williams of Odessa; Grandparents: Tina and David Haskins of Tye, Texas;  and his sister: Mya Williams of Odessa.

Haiden is preceded in death by his grandparents: Rosailie Taylor, Joe Bob Taylor and Roy Lee Williams.

Graveside services are scheduled for 9:00 a.m. Friday, January 10, 2014 at Los Angeles Section of the Ector County Cemetery, officiated by Ben Bretz. Services are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel.
