M Tercero
Manuel Galindo Tercero

Manuel Galindo Tercero, age 81, of Midland, passed from this life to be with his Lord on Monday, January 13, 2014 at Medical Center Hospital of Odessa.  He was born in Alamos de San Antonio, Chihuahua, Mexico on December 25, 1932 to the late Sylvester and Albina (Galindo) Tercero.  He worked as a commercial painter.

Manuel was an inventive person who could fix anything.  A good handyman, he could take parts from a swamp cooler and use them to repair a lawn mower.  An accident waiting to happen, however, he was always getting hurt.  He would just get up, dust himself off, and keep on going.  He enjoyed horses and leatherwork, making whips and other horse tack.  Manuel was a strong and noble man.  He could also be very hard headed and he loved his “punch”.

Those left to cherish his memory are his son:  Oscar Tercero and wife Maria of Midland; two daughters:  Zulema Leyva and husband Atanacio of Alamos de San Antonio, MX and Abilia Lujan and husband Casimiro of Odessa; eleven grandchildren and twenty-five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and beloved wife, Manuela (Leyva) Tercero, who took her journey to Heaven on March 1, 2012.

Rosary will be said at Acres West Funeral Chapel at 7:00 pm on Wednesday, January 15, 2014.  Funeral Services will be 10:30 am, Thursday, January 16, 2014 at Acres West Funeral Chapel, officiated by Father Joe Uecker.  Interment will follow at Serenity Memorial Gardens in Midland, TX.  Arrangements are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel, 8115 W. D Fleming
Debbie Kay Fleming

Debbie Kay Fleming, age 53, of Odessa, passed from this life on Monday, January 13, 2014 at University Medical Center in Lubbock, TX.  She was born in Meridian, MS on January 16, 1960 to Edward Gordan Dean and Elsie (Piner) Dean.  She married Daniel Fleming, Sr. in Andrews, TX on July 26, 1976 and they became the parents of three boys.  Debbie loved being a mom.  She was a dedicated homemaker who loved her husband and children with all of her heart. 

Debbie enjoyed butterflies and flowers, fishing, and square dancing.  She could eat without gaining an ounce and loved to cook.  In Ozona, she had cooked for Meals on Wheels.  Everyone’s friend, she would help anyone in any way she could.  She loved children and babysat for fun.  She also owned a candle shop at one time. 

Those left to cherish her love and memory are her husband:  Daniel Fleming, Sr. of Odessa; sons:  Daniel Fleming, Jr. and Shannon Fleming, both of Odessa, and William Fleming of Temple, TX; brothers:  Ralph Dean of Minnesota and Kinny Dragoo of Andrews; sisters:  Mary Elizabeth McKellop of Odessa, Jennifer Nelms of Andrews and Juanita Reed of Mississippi; and six grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her birth parents:  Edward Dean and Elsie Piner; her adoptive parents:  D.J. and Juanita Jenkins; her brother:  Roy Quinn; and her sister:  Libby Chambers.

Funeral services will be 1:00 pm Friday, January 17, 2014 at Acres West Funeral Chapel, 8115 W. University Blvd. Odessa, officiated by Reverends Daniel Fleming, Sr. and William Fleming.  Interment will follow at Peaceful Garden Section of Ector County Cemetery.  Arrangements are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel.

Lawayne Harris

Macton Lawayne Harris was called home January 13, 2014.  He was born 1934 in Rotan Texas, Fisher Co. to P.C. and Virginia Harris.

Lawayne was preceded in death by both parents; sister:  Mary Daniels; and brother:  Tommy Lee Harris.

He is survived by one daughter:  Lorrie Andrews of Pagosa Springs, CO, two sons:  Larry Harris of Midland, TX, and Lynn Harris of Odessa, TX; and long time dear friend:  Barbara H. Harris of Odessa, TX; brothers:  Bill Adair & wife Johnnie of Tracy, CA, Walter Harris & wife Vicky of Lorena, TX, Hubert Harris & wife Gwen of Axtell, TX; sisters:  Louise Wood of Brownwood, TX, Larue Roberts & husband Bill of Centerville, TX, Carolyn Smith & husband Jon of Richland, TX, Regina Tumbarello of Uvalde, TX; and lifelong best friend and cousin: Dave (cuz) Swaringin & wife Sharon of Arlington, TX; best friend:  Bobby Reed of Odessa, TX; five grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews; as well as many, many friends across the state.

Memorial services are set for 1:00 pm Saturday, February 1, 2014 at Calvary Baptist Church in Rotan, Texas, officiated by family.  Arrangements are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel and Crematory of Odessa, TX.

Enoch Barton “Maverick” Geary

Enoch Barton “Maverick” Geary, age 49, of Odessa, passed away on Monday, January 13, 2014 in Odessa.  He was born in El Paso, TX on March 13, 1964 to the late Melvin Samuel Geary and Myrtle Ann (Jester) Geary.  He was an oilfield worker.

He is survived by his sister-in-law:  Jane Geary of Texarkana, TX.

No services will be held.  Arrangements are with Acres West Funeral Chapel of Odessa.

Hazel “Charlie” Joplin

Hazel “Charlie” Joplin, 63, of Odessa, passed away at Hospice House of Odessa on Tuesday, January 14, 2014.  She was born in Pecos, TX on August 2, 1950 to Fred Reese Heinen and Anetta Joyce (Jones) Heinen.  She was a waitress.

Charlie loved to crochet.  She was an animal lover and liked horses and Western movies, especially those with John Wayne.  She enjoyed family and home festivities and her best buddy was her Chihuahua, Speedy.

She is survived by her daughter:  Cymantha McCracken of Kalispell, MT; three sisters:  Ann Martinez and husband Paul of Hurley, NM, Lita Robertson of Ft. Stockton, and Cheryl Murray and husband Dale of Odessa; and two grandchildren:  Alec Kirkland of Odessa and Daniel O’Donnel of Montana.

Her parents:  Fred and Anetta Heinen; husband:  Jerry Joplin; and daughter:  Debra Lee McCracken, precede her in death.

Memorial services will be privately held.  Arrangements are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel.

John C. Campbell, Jr.

John C. “Johnny” Campbell, Jr. passed away at the age of 90 years on 15 January 2014. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 59 years, Gladys Marie Schindler Campbell. His brothers Charles “Chuck” Campbell and Carl Campbell also preceded him in death.

Johnny was born in Burkett, Texas 14 November 1923 to John Breckenridge and Florence Moore Campbell. Johnny was the oldest of ten children. After leaving school during the great depression, he joined the Civilian Conservation Corps and moved to Cortez, Colorado where he helped in the development of the Mesa Verde National Park. Returning to Coleman, Texas he worked maintaining air planes. With World War II going on, he then volunteered for the United States Army Air Force and was trained as a flight engineer/top turret gunner on the Boeing B-17G bomber. Stationed at Podington Station 109 in England, he flew 35 missions over Europe, surviving two crash landings in France and Belgium due to battle damage. He was awarded the Air Medal with 5 Oak Leaf Clusters, the European/Africa/Middle East Campaign Medal, the WW II Victory in Europe Medal and the Army Good Conduct Medal. Returning home from the war he worked briefly in road construction and then for the State of Texas Liquor Control Board. Johnny worked for several car dealerships and then owned several small businesses of which his favorite was Permian Basin Salvage Pool. After selling the Salvage Pool and “retiring” in the late 1980’s, he spent his time buying and selling all kinds of vehicles and other things. Johnny loved the “art of the deal” and playing cards with his buddies.

Johnny is survived by son:   Scott Campbell of Midland, Texas; daughter:  Kelli Campbell-Hunton of Odessa, Texas;  son:  Jeff Campbell, wife Marie, and grandchildren:  Wil, Colin and Cate Campbell, all of Bulverde, Texas; sisters:  Billie Ruth Alston of Tyler, Mildred Rawls of Odessa, Virginia Faye Cruger of Odessa, Betty Sue Lacey of Odessa; and brothers:  Billy Joe Campbell of Stamford, TX, Kenneth Campbell of Haskell, TX, and Jerry Campbell of Odessa.

The family will receive friends at Acres West Funeral Chapel on Friday, January 17, 2014 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm.  Funeral services with military honors will be 1:00 pm Saturday, January 18, 2014 at Belmont Baptist Church, 806 N. Belmont, Odessa, officiated by Pastor John McLemore.  Honorary pallbearers will be Dee Melton, Tom Hamil, Jim Pritchard, Mallie G. Turner, Jim Leonard, and Jack Miller. Arrangements are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Commemorative Air Force of Midland or to the charity of your choice are appreciated.

Bob Stangby

Bob Stangby, 56, of Odessa, Texas, passed away on Thursday, January 16, 2014 at Hospice House in Odessa. He was born on December 6, 1957 in Billings, Montana to Quintin & Phyllis Stangby. Bob married Terri Ann Custer on February 18, 1996. They spent 17 wonderful years together.  Bob was a member of Lutheran Church of the Risen Lord.

Bob was an extremely intelligent and meticulous individual. He followed through with whatever project he started and he loved to see what made things work. He would tear stuff apart just to see what made it tick and then put it back together. He loved all animals, just wasn’t fond of cats until he met Woody, the bar cat.  That cat came to the bar everyday and won Bob’s heart. Bob was a fanatic over mustang vehicles and he never owned any other brand of vehicle, always Mustangs!! He even built a boat together with his son, Seth. They were never able to take it out on the water but the experience was worth it all. Bob was a handsome man who loved golfing, bowling and was a pool shark. He will be missed by many.

Those left to cherish his love and memory are his wife Terri Stangby of Odessa; Mother: Phyllis Welch and husband Bill of Chaska, Minnesota; Son: Seth Robert Stangby of Odessa; Brother: Joseph Allan Stangby & wife Terri of Chaska, Minnesota.

He is preceded in death by his Father: Quintin Robert Stangby, Sr. and his Brother: Jack Bruce Stangby.

Memorial services will be 2:00 pm, Monday, January 20, 2014 at Lutheran Church of the Risen Lord, 1603 N. Grandview, Odessa, Texas, officiated by Larry Hood and Mike Winfrey. Arrangements are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel.

Linda Faye Settles

Linda Faye Settles, 62, of Odessa, passed away on Thursday, January 16, 2014 at her residence. She was born in Lawton, Oklahoma on August 15, 1951 to Earl and Ava Walters.  She was a member of Zion Christian Church.

Linda was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She will be missed by many.

Those left to cherish her love and memory are her husband: Domingo Settles of Odessa; son: Andrew William Settles of Odessa; daughters: Sandra Henderson and husband Tommy Tucker, Janet Henderson and Pam Welch all of Odessa; brother: Claudie Walters of Odessa; nine grandchildren: Joseph, Matrassa, Lee, Sammy, Mystery, Zorander, Makayla, Andrew Jr. and Tara; and three great-grandchildren.

Linda is preceded in death by her parents: Earl and Ava Walters and a son: Anthony Settles.

Memorial services will be held at 5:00 pm, Monday, January 20, 2014 at Zion Christian Church located at 9300 W. 26th St., Odessa, Texas officiated by Dr. Dewey D. Blevins. Arrangements are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel. 

S Arroyo
Sergio Arroyo

Sergio Arroyo, age 37, of Odessa, passed from this life on Sunday, January 19, 2014 at Hospice House of Odessa.  Sergio was born in Pecos, TX on September 4, 1976 to Jesus Jose Arroyo and Margarita Minjarez Arroyo.  Diagnosed with his first tumor at the early age of seven, doctors predicted Sergio would not survive to his twelfth birthday.  A fighter, he beat the odds however and graduated from Permian High School.

Sergio was a wrestling fan and loved to draw.  Hot pockets and hamburgers were favorite foods of his.

Those left to cherish his memory are his mother:  Margarita Arroyo of Odessa; father:  Jesus Jose Arroyo and wife Luz of Odessa; grandparents:  Rafaela Burciaga of Pecos and Chavel and Consuelo Arroyo of Odessa; brother:  Jesus Jose Arroyo, Jr and wife Erika of Odessa; sister:  Elida Arroyo of Odessa; and nieces and nephews:  Ramon A. Luna, Jr. and wife Anabel Arenivas, Maria Y. Arroyo, Mario M. Arroyo, Maria E. Arroyo, Jose I. Arroyo, Lourdes L. Arroyo, Iris N. Arroyo, Noel N. Arroyo, Ervey S. Arroyo.

Gwen Castleberry

Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.

Gwendolyn Turner Castleberry, age 71, of Odessa died peacefully at her home January 19, 2014 after a brief illness.  She was born April 19, 1942 to W. H. Turner and Wanda (Bowman) Turner in Hobbs, NM.  She married W. L. Castleberry November 1, 1957.  She was a homemaker, who loved to laugh and brought joy to all who met her.  Gwen was a loving wife and mother, whose grandchildren were the light of her life. 

She is preceded in death by her parents.

She is survived by her husband of over 57 years:  W. L. Castleberry, and by her children:  Darrell Castleberry of Odessa, Debra Minchey of Texarkana, and Donna Hazard of Odessa; sister:  Willa Geane Akin of Tulsa, OK; brother:  Bill Turner and wife Cari of Carrollton; grandchildren:  Chad Payne of Odessa, Krista Wiele of Ft. Worth, Casey Alexander of Odessa, Nicole Stein of Katy, Shane Minchey of Texarkana, Tye Castleberry of Odessa, Chance Castleberry of Lubbock, Lindsey Castleberry of Whitewright; and sixteen great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday evening, January 21, 2014 from 5:00 to 7:00 pm.  Funeral services will be 1:00 pm CST, Wednesday, January 22, 2014 at Acres West Funeral Chapel in Odessa, officiated by Chaplain Larry Hood.  Interment will follow at Brunson Memorial Cemetery in Eunice, NM.  Arrangements are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel, 8115 W. University Blvd. Odessa, TX.
