Gloria Gomez Rodriguez

Gloria Gomez Rodriguez, age 61, of Midland, passed from this life at her residence on Thursday, August 20, 2015. She was born in Ojinaga, Chihuahua, Mexico on January 26, 1954 to Santos Gomez and Aida Rodriguez.

Gloria was a warrior of God. She was baptized at the age of 16 and was always a member of a prayer group no matter where she attended. Gloria had tremendous faith in God and loved her family very much. She raised four children whom she loved dearly.

Those left to cherish her love and memory are her father: Santos Gomez of Odessa; two sons; Noe Hernandez of Odessa and Oscar Hernandez of Houston, TX; two daughters: Diana Hernandez of Midland and Rebecca Ramos of Odessa; two brothers: Javier Gomez and Auden Gomez both of Ojinaga, Mexico; five sisters: Lucila Gomez of California, Margarita Ross of California, Otilia Sanchez of California, Irma Gomez of Ojinaga and Martha King of California; and ten grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her mother: Aida Rodriguez.

Funeral services will be on 9:00 am, Saturday, August 22, 2015 at Acres West Funeral Chapel, officiated by Pastor Fernando de Luna. Deirdre Jan Johnson
Deirdre Jan Johnson, age 49, of Odessa, passed from this life at Medical Center Hospital on Thursday, August 20, 2015. She was born in Dumas, TX on August 15, 1966 to James and Lola Johnson.

Deirdre grew up around the Canadian River. She loved fishing and camping, as well as riding dirt bikes. She also had a great sense of humor and could always find ways of making you laugh. Deirdre enjoyed listening to old country, rock and roll and sitting out on Tamara’s porch drinking a cold one and singing karaoke. Deirdre had 13 dogs of which she loved very much, however, her children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews were the light of her life.

Those left to cherish her love and memory are her mother: Lola Johnson of Odessa; four sons: James Luther and his wife Sara of Amarillo; Steven Luther of Amarillo; and Chad Johnson and Derek Johnson both of Odessa; daughter: Chandra Johnson and husband Derik Walker of Odessa; sister: Tamara Seaton and husband Coby of Odessa; four grandchildren: Braxton, Bladen, Treiten and Creeshain Luther, all of Amarillo and nieces: Dani, Savannah and Kaiya, and nephew: Tristan Seaton, all of Odessa.

She was preceded in death by her father James Johnson.

Memorial services are scheduled for 4:00 pm, Saturday, August 22, 2015 at Acres West Funeral Chapel, officiated by Jimmy Braswell. Arrangements are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel.

Patty Ann (Buttrell) Sproul
Opal Pearl (Buttrell) Sproul, also known as Patty Ann or Pat, age 80, passed away on Friday, August 21, 2015 at Sierra Nursing Home in Odessa. She was born in Snyder, TX on Wednesday, July 10, 1935 to the late Ople Afton and Leona (Bishop) Buttrell. Patty owned her own restaurant.

Those left to cherish her love and memory are son: Darrell Haddock and wife Trish of Odessa; daughters: Cindy Haddock Mead of Ft. Davis, Debbie Parrott of Marfa, Terri Guaajardo of San Antonio, and Marisa Patel of Frisco; sister: Sue Bowen of Rio Rancho, NM; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Patty’s husband Thomas Lee “Tom” Sproul preceded her in death, as well as her sister: Cathy Harden.

There will be no services at this time. Arrangements are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel.

Juan De Dios Hinojos
Juan De Dios Hinojos, age 70, of Odessa, passed away on Friday, August 21, 2015 at his residence in Odessa. He was born in Coyame, MX on Wednesday, March 28, 1945 to the late Lazaro and Josefa (Carrasco) Hinojos. Juan was a Seventh Day Adventist where he met the Lord. He met the love of his life, Evanjelina Alvarado, and married her in Van Horn, TX on Wednesday, August 17, 1968.

Juan was an extremely hard working man, working for Leslie Pierce Construction for fifteen years then moving on to G & G Vacuum until his disablement five years later. Juan enjoyed being outside; he liked to hunt, fish, and go camping. Juan was a very kind and wise man; he liked to make people laugh and smile. Juan loved to spend time with his grandchildren, and he loved his wife dearly, who in turn fell in love with him when she was ten. He was a big family man. Juan will be loved and missed greatly.

Those left to cherish his love and memory are wife: Eva Hinojos of Odessa; son: Johnny and wife Olga Hinojos of Odessa; daughters: Marisol Valenzuela of Odessa, and Anjelica Martinez and fiancé Jesse Abalos of Odessa; brothers: Francisco Hinojos of Mirage, AZ, Isidro Hinojos of Odessa, and Trini Hinojos of Odessa; sisters: Maria Urias of Angleton, TX, Delia Franco of San Antonio, his twin sister Lilia Tarango of Van Horn, and Nati Franco of Houston; eleven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren.

Juan’s parents and one sister, Ester Hinojos Vargas, preceded him in death.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, August 25, 2015 at 10 AM, officiated by Fr. Seleno Solis. Interment will follow at Van Horn Cemetery. Pallbearers will be his grandsons. Arrangements are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel.

Ella Mae “Doodie” Park

Ella Mae “Doodie” Park, age 79, of Odessa, passed away on Tuesday, August 25, 2015 at Medical Center Hospital in Odessa. She was born on Sunday, January 5, 1936 to the late James Leonard and Lyddia (Greenwood) Smith in Eastland County, Texas.

Ella was a good Christian and a wonderful woman. She had several good friends, but Ella was a private person and she didn’t get out much. Ella had survived lung cancer, and was left disabled. She helped raise her nephews, Bill Hughes and Jimmy Smith, and she adored all her nieces and nephews. When Ella was younger, she worked in a printing shop with her late husband, Wallace “Wally” Park. When she was able to, Ella loved to go out and work in her yard. A great singer, she enjoyed using her voice with the choir at Westwood Baptist Church. She also loved to sing with her brothers when she was younger and play guitar.

Those left to cherish her love and memory are sisters: Loretta Taylor of Odessa, and Betty Ary of Abilene; numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.

In addition to her parents, Ella’s husband: Wally, her brothers: J.P. Smith, Leroy Smith and Thomas Leonard Smith, and sisters: Mary Lee Masters preceded her in death.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, August 27, 2015 at 2:00 pm at Acres West Funeral Chapel, officiated by Bro. Weeks DuBose. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park. Arrangements are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel.

Mary Nell Allen, age 77, of Odessa, passed away at her home on Tuesday, August 25, 2015.  She was born in Sulfur, OK on August 23, 1938 to the late Jack Oscar and Jimmie Hazel Blevins.  Mary married Aubrey Lee Allen in Odessa on December 28, 1987.  She was the previous owner and operator of “Muffins” in Midland and had worked in a dry cleaning shop.

She is survived by her children, son:  Wayne Allen Altis and wife Kalen of Odessa and four daughters:  Angie Fairchild and Linda Rocha of Oklahoma City, OK, Sharon McCollum of Odessa, and Wanda Quiver and husband Don of Anadarko, OK.  She is also survived by her brothers:  Tommy Lanning, Eugene “Stubby” Lanning, and Freddy Lanning, all of Crane; sisters: June Staggs and husband Tony of Crane and Virginia Sewell of Granite, OK; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren and several great-great grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, Mary is preceded in death by her husband:  Aubrey Allen and brother:  Wendell Blevins.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday evening from 4:00 to 9:00pm.  Funeral services will be at 1:00 pm on Friday, August 29, 2015 at Acres West Funeral Chapel, officiated by Pastor Bob Thayer.  Arrangements are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel and Crematory.

Rita Antonieta Estrada

Rita Antonieta Estrada, age 59, of Odessa, passed from this life on Tuesday, August 25, 2015 at Medical Center Hospital.  She was born in El Paso, TX on October 28, 1955 to the late Alejandro and Lydia (Lucero) Lopez.  She married Jose Estrada on June 14, 1974.  She was a homemaker.

Rita was a happy person who was amiable and fun to be around.  She was always willing and happy to help others out, no matter what it took.  She enjoyed cruising around and listening to the oldies.  Her favorite songs were “Paloma Blanca”, “Knock Three Times”, and “Por que”.

Those left to cherish her memory are her husband:  Jose Estrada of Odessa; son:  Jose Alejandro Estrada of Colorado Springs, CO; daughter:  Elida Estrada Ramirez of Odessa; brother:  Ronaldo Lopez of El Paso; sisters:  Sylvia Subia, Linda Vasquez, Elida Jimenez, and Luisa Lopez, all of El Paso, TX; and nine grandchildren.

Rosary will be recited at Acres West Funeral Chapel at 7:00 pm on Friday, August 28, 2015.  All other funeral arrangements are privately held.  Arrangements are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel.

Herman Bryant
Herman Ray “Broom” Bryant, Jr.

Herman Ray “Broom” Bryant, Jr. age 63, passed away at Medical Center Hospital in Odessa on Saturday, August 29, 2015.  He was born to the late Herman Sr. and Eddie Lorene Stringfellow Harris on March 31, 1952 in Moody, Texas. 

During his years at Hayes Elementary and Blackshear, he enjoyed running track and playing football.  Herman worked in the oilfield, but was a jack of all trades.  He could work on anything from cars to TV’s, so to him, there was no such thing as junk, just treasures. He was an humble man who was very quiet – until something got him angry and then he was a completely different person.  Herman loved his big family and looked forward to family get-togethers.  His grandbabies were the light of his life.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son:  Herman Ray Bryant, III; sister:  Laverne Williams; and brothers:  Bobby Harris, James Harris, Tom Harris, and Larry Bryant.

Those left to cherish his love and memory are his wife: Shirley (Ellis) Bryant of Odessa; daughter:  ShaRonda Elliott of Odessa; son:  Devorick Douglas of Temple; five brothers:  Billy Harris (Mary) of Midland, Charles Hunter (Paula)  of Copperas Cove, Robert Bryant of Waco, Sidney Bryant of Teague, and Lafate Bryant of Waco; seven sisters:  Brenda Bryant, Lucille Bryant, Sandra Williams (Ervin) and Laura Johnson, all of Odessa; Ruby Fowler of Temple, Lisa Bryant of Dallas and Cartelia Bryant of Los Angeles, CA; grandchildren:  Kia, Kiara and Kianna Watson of Odessa; cousins:  Earl Templeton of Lubbock, Odell Mason, Jr. of San Antonio, and Karen Templeton and Marie Harris, both of Odessa; Uncles:  Odell Mason, Sr. of Big Spring and Frank Templeton of Odessa; and a host of nieces, nephews, and extended family.

Funeral services will be 1:00 pm Friday, September 4, 2015 at Bethlehem Baptist Church, officiated by Brother Gene O. Collins, with interment to follow at Peaceful Gardens section of Ector County Cemetery.  Arrangements are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel.

Billie Jo Bates

Billie Jo Bates, age 66, of Odessa, passed away at her residence in Odessa on Saturday, August 29, 2015. She was born in Aspermont, TX on Sunday, September 12, 1948 to the late Stanley Asbury and Ruby Pauline (Handlin) Bates.

Billie was a wonderful woman; she worked in the medical field as a nurse for her entire adult life. She was a member of Crescent Park Baptist Church for years, as well as a Pink Lady at Medical Center Hospital. Billie was a devoted grandma, and a very loving mother, daughter, sister, and friend. She never was a negative person, trying to always be upbeat and positive, saying, “I am blessed”. She will be loved and dearly missed.

Those left to cherish her love and memory are sons: Christopher Dale Bates and wife Aessa of Tomball, and Jodee Shane Bates and wife Monika of Odessa; brothers: William Bates of Casper, WY , and Jim Bates of El Dorado, AR; granddaughters: Angelica Cheyenne Bates and Ashley Rose Bates, both of Odessa; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be at 7 pm on Friday, September 4, 2015 at Crescent Park Baptist Church. Arrangements are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel.

James Charles McKinley
James Charles McKinley
James Charles McKinley, age 87, of Odessa, passed away on Thursday, September 3, 2015 at his residence in Odessa. He was born in Henderson, TX on Wednesday, September 26, 1928 to the late Edgar and Mary (Stafford) McKinley. James served in the United States Army.

James was a wonderful man who enjoyed being outside. He had a fantastic green thumb, and he spent a lot of his time gardening. James liked to travel, and he did so until he became too ill to do it. James served our country proudly, and he was a veteran of the Korean War. He will be loved and missed dearly.

Those left to cherish his love and memory are his son: Donald Baker of Odessa.

His parents preceded him in death.

Graveside services, with military honors, will be held Tuesday, September 8, 2015 at 3 pm at Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Abilene, TX, officiated by Rev. Larry Hood. Arrangements are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel.
Sarah Joyce Van Ness
Sarah Joyce Van Ness
Sarah Joyce Van Ness, age 69, left this earth to be with her heavenly father on September 6, 2015. She was born to Everett Woodrow Haase and Sarah Lee Dunn on June 28, 1946 in Duncan, Oklahoma.

Joyce enjoyed doing arts and crafts, even placing 2nd for her artwork in art shows at the Permian Basin Fair. She also enjoyed going to garage sales and getting a good deal. She loved her family and friends very much. She attended Immanuel Baptist Church in Odessa and enjoyed spending time doing church activities and always looked forward to Sunday school.

Joyce was a breast cancer survivor, as well as a huge part of the group Surviving Life’s Journey and was loved by all of her fellow survivors and family. She was also a speaker for The United Way campaign in previous years and had retired from Ector County Appraisal District.

Joyce cherished spending time with her family as well as cracking jokes. She never passed up the chance to tell you that she loved you. Joyce was very kind and loving. She always made sure that everyone was taken care of first, that’s what made her the angel she is today.

Joyce was preceded in death by her father: Everett Haase, mother Sarah Lee Dunn and brother, Jerry Haase.

Those left to cherish her love and memory are her son: Matt Van Ness of Odessa; grandchildren: Jackie Van Ness of Odessa, Jessica Van Ness of Denver City, and Tyler Van Ness of Odessa; brother: Larry Haase of Eunice, New Mexico; sister: Helen Overton of Eunice, New Mexico; one great-grandchild: William Walker IV.

Memorial services will be scheduled at a later date.
