David Freels
David Freels

William David Freels, age 69, of Odessa, passed from this life at his residence on Wednesday, December 23, 2015. He was born in Sunbright, Tennessee on November 5, 1946 to Earnest and Enon Freels. David married Toni Voglino in 1969 in Odessa after getting out of the service. He was Toni’s best friend and companion for 47 years.

David could be quite a character. He had a beautiful smile and a warm heart. David loved his friends and family. He was a Civil War buff and was the family historian. He made dozens of notebooks full of his and Toni’s family genealogy. David’s granddaughter Illiana was his #1 favorite person. He was also a workaholic. David was everything from a salesman and truck driver to the owner of a Welding Supply. He loved Nascar, guns, country and gospel music.

Those left to cherish his love and memory are his wife: Toni Freels of Odessa, TX; two sons: David and Michael Freels, both of Odessa, TX; daughter: Lisa Russell and husband James of Odessa, TX; brother: Houston Freels of Houston, TX; sister: Joyce Laub of Odessa, TX and one grandchild: Illiana Russell.

He was preceded in death by his parents: Earnest and Enon Freels; brother: Paul Freels; and four sisters: Earnestine Adams, Ruby Steinhauer, Marlyn Fletcher and Betty Ramsey.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am, Tuesday, December 29, 2015 at Acres West Funeral Chapel, officiated by Brother Jimmy Braswell. Burial with military honors will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Arrangements are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel.

Genoveva Rodriguez
Genoveva (Ramirez) Rodriguez

Genoveva (Ramirez) Rodriguez, age 90, of Gardendale, TX, passed from this life at Sienna Nursing Home on Saturday, December 26, 2015. She was born in Terlingua, TX on January 3, 1925 to the late Mariano and Lucia Ramirez.

Genoveva loved to knit and crochet. She was a volunteer grandparent at Headstart in Artesia, NM. She also loved to bake and cook for her kids and family. Genoveva was very devoted to her lifetime partner of 43 years, Francisco “Quate” Moreno.

Those left to cherish her love and memory are her partner Francisco Moreno of Gardendale, TX; two sons: Jose Rodriguez and wife Nina of Odessa, TX, Hector Rodriguez and wife Rosalia of Gardendale, TX; daughter: Martha Ochoa of Monahans, TX; nine grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents: Mariano and Lucia Ramirez and one sister: Germa Abarca.

Rosary will be 7:00 pm, Monday, December 28, 2015 at Acres West Funeral Chapel. Graveside services will be 1:00 pm, Tuesday, December 29, 2015 at the Peaceful Gardens section of Ector County Cemetery, officiated by Father Joe Uecker, Arrangements are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel.

Frances M Tice
Frances Marie Hogan Tice (1925 - 2015)

Frances Marie Hogan Tice, age 90, passed away on Saturday, December 26, 2015, at Medical Center Hospital.

Frances was born in Eola, Texas on December 6, 1925, the eldest of eleven children born to Manuel & Annie Hogan. She married Burton Robert Tice, Sr. on December 31, 1947, in Odessa, Texas. Together they had four children, eight grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren with another on the way. After retiring from G. C. Murphy Company she opened Covenant Christian Day Care where she developed many close relationships with children and their parents that she considered her extended family.

Her strength came from knowing Jesus and trusting in Him. She raised her children at Calvary Baptist Church in Odessa, Texas where she taught various children’s classes and was always available to help wherever needed. She was currently a member of Immanuel Baptist Church.

She loved camping and fishing with her family and always looked forward to her family gathering at her home. Regardless of how many hours she worked at her job, she would always put a meal on the table to serve anyone that came by.


She is preceded in death by her parents, her spouse, Burton Robert Tice, Sr., five brothers: Art, EJ, Dewayne, Roy, and Floyd Hogan, one sister, Fay Allison, and two sons-in-law, Ed Dison and Gary Rheingans.

She is survived by her children: Alice Woods of Odessa, Texas, Burton Robert (Bob) Tice, Jr., and wife Marsha of Aurora, Colorado; Jean Dison of Rankin, Texas; and Dot Evans and husband Paul of Odessa, Texas; grandchildren Jennifer Opila and husband Pete of Northglenn, Colorado; Michelle Barrow, Melinda Brady and husband David all of Odessa, Texas; Amber Anderson and husband Tod of Steamboat Springs, Colorado; Angela Johnson and husband Rodd of Midland, Texas; Candi Kinney and husband David; Carl Evans and wife Lori; all of Odessa, Texas, Stormi Allen and husband Victor of Rankin, Texas; two sisters Opal Topper of Odessa, Texas, and Judy Conner of Shallowater, Texas; two brothers, Wayne Hogan of Panama City, Florida, and Charles Hogan of Hickory, North Carolina; and fifteen great-grandchildren: Hayden, Opal, and Lamar Opila, Johnathan, Patrick, and Zachary Barrow, David Charles and Hannah Brady, Ashley and Talyn Anderson, Ryan and Riley Johnson, Christina and Carson Kinney, Aleah Dison and one on the way; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be Tuesday evening from 5 - 7:00 p.m. Services are scheduled for Wednesday, December 30th at 2:00 p.m. at Acres West Funeral Chapel and interment immediately following at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
 In lieu of flowers, she requested that donations be made to a children’s ministry or children’s cancer research.

Sara Huertas Herrera
Sara (Huertas) Herrera

Sara (Huertas) Herrera, age 77, of Odessa, TX, passed from this life at Odessa Regional Hospital on Sunday, December 27, 2015. She was born on September 6, 1938 in Ojinaga, Mexico to the late Santiago and Isidra Huertas. Sara married Jesus Herrera and they spent 40 years together.

Sara loved listening to Norteno music. Sara enjoyed visiting San Antonio and spending summers in Mexico. She was a good grandmother. Sara was loving, caring and will be greatly missed.

Those left to cherish her love and memory are her husband: Jesus Herrera of Odessa, TX; sons: Ruben Marquez Concepcion Armendariz and wife Maria of Ojinaga, MX, Pedro Marquez and Vincente Marquez and wife Victar, both of Odessa, TX; daughters: Ramona Marquez of Plainview, TX, Sylvia and husband Juan Hernandez Sr., Dora and husband Pedro Castrellon, and Maria Herrera, all of Odessa, TX; brothers: Raul Huertas, Paulino Huertas, and Gilberto Huertas, all of Ojinaga, MX; 37 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren and numerous great-great-grandchildren

She was preceded in death by her parents: Santiago and Isidra Huertas and daughter: Guadalupe Martinez Herrera.

Funeral Services will be Monday, January 4, 2016 at Acres West Funeral Chapel, officiated by Father Fernando Bonilla.  Burial will follow at Peaceful Garden section of Ector County Cemetery. Arrangements are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel.

Merced Gonzalez de Ramos, age 85, of Odessa, passed away at Medical Center Hospital on Monday, December 28, 2015.  She was born in Ojinaga, Chihuahua, Mexico to the late Efrain and Gabina (Mendoza) Gonzalez.  She was a homemaker.

Funeral services will be at a later date with burial at Cementerio de San Juan in San Juan, Ojinaga, Chihuahua, Mexico.  Arrangements are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel of Odessa and Funeraria de Valle in Ojinaga.

Jose Angel Valenzuela Sr., 55, of Odessa passed from this life at his residence on Monday, December 28, 2015. He was born in Mexico to Inocencio Valenzuela and Virginia Guerrero on Friday, June 3, 1960.   He was a self employed painter.  Jose Angel was a Christian.

Those left to cherish his love and memory are his four sons: Jose Valenzuela Jr., Ricardo Valenzuela, Jaime Valenzuela and Alan Valenzuela of Odessa; one daughter: Ruby V. Escarcega of Odessa; four brothers: Gregorio and Antonio Valenzuela both of El Paso, Socorro Valenzuela and Inocencio Valenzuela Jr. both of Odessa; five sisters: Clara Nunez of Mexico, Paula Ruiz, Genoveva Fuentes, Genoveva Herrera and Sylvia Santamaria all of Odessa; nine grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Jose was preceded in death by his parents: Inocencio Valenzuela and Virginia Guerrero.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 am, Thursday, December 31, 2015 at Iglesia de Dios Vivo, 6841 W Dunn St. Odessa. Interment will follow at Peaceful Gardens Section of Ector County Cemetery. Arrangements are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel.

Jayson Randale Prentice, “Jake” age 39, of Odessa, passed from this life and joined his Heavenly Father on Monday, December 28, 2015. He was born in Andrews, TX on October 3, 1976 to his mother Brenda Johnson Prentice.

Those left to cherish his love and memory are his mother: Brenda Bonds of San Antonio, TX; parent Robert and wife Tina Prentice of Odessa, TX; daughter: Julie Prentice of Odessa, TX; brother: Bryan Prentice of Odessa, TX; two sisters: Sherry Prentice Carrillo and husband Rudy Carrillo of Corpus Christie, TX and Tonya Prentice Hofer and husband Ronnie R. Hofer of Fredericksburg, TX, aunt: Mitzie Baker of Odessa, TX; 7 nieces, 4 nephews, 10 great nieces and nephews, lots of cousins, and friends. Many others he loved dearly and considered his own siblings and family.

He was preceded in death by his infant son: Jayson Prentice Jr., Tom H. Prentice, uncle Bobby Baker and grandparents.

Vivian Anne (Bickle) Hanuschik, age 74, of Odessa, passed from this life at Medical Center Hospital on December 29, 2015. She was born on April 3, 1941 in Las Vegas, NM to the late Armon and Mary (Williams) Bickle.

Those left to cherish her love and memory are her husband: John Lamerand of Odessa, TX; daughter: Peggy Lynn Griffin of Pecos, TX; eight brothers: A.H. Bickle and wife Renee of Dallas, TX, Thomas Bickle and wife Linda of Colorado City, Co, David Bickle and wife Cathy of Odessa, TX, Richard Bickle and wife Lonna of Lafayette, LA, Stephen Bickle of Dallas, TX, Rodney Bickle and wife Cindy of Oregon, Cecil Casteel of Florida and Franky Casteel and wife Shawna of Wink, TX; two sisters: Lorece Homes of Albuquerque, NM and Mary Williams of Odessa, TX; four grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents: Armon and Mary Bickle.

Funeral services will be 5:00 pm, Saturday, January 2, 2016 at Acres West Funeral Chapel, officiated by Reverend Jimmy Braswell. Arrangements are entrusted to Acres west Funeral Chapel.

Mary Inez Holt
Mary Inez Holt

Mary Inez Holt, age 93, of Odessa, passed away at Deerings Nursing and Rehabilitation in Odessa on Tuesday, December 29, 2015.  She was born in Memphis, TX on March 12, 1922 to the late William Marvin and Eva Pearl (Warnecke) Bryant. She married Guy Layne Holt and he preceded her in death on August 31, 1987.  She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great grandmother, sister and aunt. 

A beloved longtime member of Vine Baptist Church, Inez was very active in the church for over 50 years.  She worked at Fancy Fins Pet Store for over 20 years. 

In addition to her parents and husband, Inez was preceded in death by her infant baby brother and three other brothers:  Henry Bryant, Paul Bryant, and Bill Bryant; three sisters:  Eva Morgan, Ada Wright, and Jean Daily; three nephews:  Jackie, Bill, and Randy; great-nephew:  Sean Smith; and two beloved sons-in-law:  Carl Kirk and Jimmie Malone.

Those left to cherish her love and memory are her daughter:  Martha Malone; sister:  Athalea Smith; three grandchildren:  Laura Robinson and husband Ronny, Timothy Kirk and Jamie Henry, all of Odessa; four great-grandchildren:  Coby Kirk and wife Tasha, Kelsi Kirk, Terrin Henry, and Arianna Henry; two great-great grandchildren:  Annabelle Kirk and Nathaniel Kirk; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be at Vine Baptist Church at 2:00 pm on Saturday, January 2, 2016, officiated by Brother Jeff Cleere.  Arrangements are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel.

The family wishes to thank Deerings Nursing and Rehab and Staff for their loving care to our mom and grandma.

Betty Jean Barker Johnson
Betty Jean (Barker) Johnson

Betty Jean (Barker) Johnson, age 57, of Odessa, passed from this life at Medical Center Hospital on Wednesday, December 30, 2015. She was born on May 26, 1958 in Talladega, Alabama to Howard and Betty (Phillips) Barker.

Betty loved her dogs Lacy and Chronic very much. She also enjoyed drinking Bud Light Lime and harassing her friends. Betty loved all of her friends as if they were her own family.

Those left to cherish her love and memory are her four sons: Timothy Barker of Hubbard, TX, Chris Gamal of Alabama, David Gamal of Odessa, TX, Jonothan Barker of California; two brothers: Howard Barker and James Barker, both of Bakersfield, California; several grandchildren and special friends: Lorri, Nece and Mary; and too many others to list.

She was preceded in death by her parents: Howard and Betty Barker and husband:  Leroy Johnson.

Memorial services will be Friday, January 8, 2016 at Bob’s Place at 5:00 pm.
